SolidS do not have any intentions to slow down their so far perfect ride in the RE:START series. Kiss Me Quick is an experimental entry that brings out the best in this group: their fiery sound and powerful performances.
Title: SQ RE:START series vol.5 Tsubasa&Dai Label: Tsukipro/Movic Release date: 31/05/2019 Genre: Electro-rock/Industrial/Minimal
Tracklist:
1 - Kiss Me Quick 2 - Kiss Me Quick (off vocal)
Track analysis:
1 – Kiss Me Quick
Minimalistic synths and an impactful snare-kick beat lead the way for this song. This unusual intro gives way to a verse in which overdriven guitar riffs and progressive synths take control. The song makes great use of a blend of electronica and industrial rock to shine and sound unique within SolidS’ repertoire. The chorus is incredibly catchy and makes great use of all the rawness and darkness from the instrumental by putting synths and dirty guitars in the spotlight, bringing powerful bass lines and big yet, at the same time, ethereal atmospheric synths, giving the listener a “paradise” or “dreamy” soundscape. Kiss Me Quick bets heavily on that alluring sound that does not need many hits and bits to materialize into a great song.
Soma Saito and Yuichiro Umehara’s are paired up in this release. Saito, now a powerhouse within SolidS and Umehara that keeps on improving, already showcasing good control and technique in his singing. Both delivered a simple, direct and alluring performance. Their performance sounds incredibly minimalistic but it, alongside the dark instrumental, packs a lot of power that is easily noticeable in the the way both tackle the chorus. A tenor (Saito) and a baritone (Umehara) is always a good mix in which there is no complete overlapping of vocals, in which it is possible to notice and pay attention to the two impressive, yet very distinct performances. The fact that, at some point, Saito occupies our right side and Umehara the left side only further contributes to make their performances even clearer to us. Saito gave an all rounded performance covering almost all his range, bringing to this performance falsetto as well as a whole lot of vibrato. He tapped into his low, mid and, especially, high register – in which he shone with falsetto ad-libs and stunning high notes. Umehara, on the other hand, was solely in charge of lower, deeper notes, a task that is not easy. He brought depth to this performance and added a well needed extra bit of allure to this song with his vibrato. They complemented each other’s vocals and the end result is a technical yet easy sounding and suggestive performance, befitting of this song’s theme.
All in all, Kiss Me Quick keeps the momentum going for SolidS. Another perfect entry for what has been so far a perfect RE:START series participation.
