Seiyuu Digest #95 – Yoshitaka Yamaya

Seiyuu Digest 95 Yoshitaka

With an awesome variety sense, impressive singing skills and a lot of voice acting talent, it is a shock that Yoshitaka Yamaya doesn’t get the love he deserves.

Yoshitaka Yamaya

Yoshitaka Yamaya

KANJI: 山谷祥生

BORN: February 15, 1992

OCCUPATION: voice actor,

HEIGHT: 171 cm

Yoshitaka Yamaya was born on February 15, 1992, in Miyagi and is currently represented by First Wind Production.

Seiyuu

Although he loved the anime series “Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu” and was curious about voice acting, it seems that life was taking Yamaya to another route.

In 2011, he was attending college, set to start a career in something else than voice acting. However, in that year, a tragedy hit Japan: Great East Japan Earthquake.

Yamaya has cited that happening as the trigger for him to drop out of college and pursue his dream of becoming a voice actor.

He ended up attending Tokyo Animator Academy’s Department of Voice Actor Talent, graduating from it, and soon after joined Space Craft, talent agency that, back then housed fellow seiyuu and stage actor, Toshiki Masuda.

2013 – 2016

Making a name for himself… with a leading role in his 1st year in the industry

Yoshitaka Yamaya debuted as a voice actor in 2013 with a minor role in the anime series, Senran Kagura.

Itsuki Tadano
Itsuki Tadano

He was cast as Itsuki Tadano, catcher for Inashiro in the popular sports anime series, Diamond no Ace. He ended up reprising this role from 2014 until 2020.

Little did he know that 2014 would be his breakthrough year, opening the doors for really awesome projects.

To kick off 2014, Yamaya changed talent agencies, bidding goodbye to Space Craft and joining WITH LINE.

Yuuki Hase
Yuuki Hase

In that same year, he was cast in his first leading role. He voiced the kind-hearted Yuuki Hase in the slice-of-life anime series “Isshuukan Friends.“.

The anime series was well received in Japan, putting the spotlight on Yamaya for the very first time in his career.

Yamaya instantly grabbed the attention of the viewers with his performance, something that, yet again, is rare for a rookie to do right off the bat.

Now that he was showing just how talented he was – to the point of voicing the lead character in an anime series packed with star seiyuu -, it would only build up his reputation and open doors for the coming years.

2017 –

Looking for consistency in music anime series

Kensuke Yaegashi
Kensuke Yaegashi

In 2017, the TSUKIPRO franchise premiered its anime adaptation, TSUKIPRO THE ANIMATION. Yoshitaka Yamaya reprised his role as Kensuke Yaegashi, Growth’s member and avid gamer.

In this case, it wasn’t his voice acting skills that impressed people. It was his singing skills, being on par with vastly technical singers, and managing to deliver outstanding performances with minimal effort.

He would end up reprising his role in 2021 for Tsukipro The Animation 2.

Kyosuke Aoi anime
Kyosuke Aoi anime

Still in the same year, Yamaya reprised his role as the passionate and strategic Kyosuke Aoi, one of the twins part of the idol group, W.

Although this group is far from being highlighted as much as other groups, in the anime adaptation The iDOLM@STER SideM, Yamaya got to showcase a bit of his range, delivering a rich, emotional performance.

He reprised his role in 2018 in the chibi adaptation of the anime The iDOLM@STER SideM: Wake Atte Mini!.

Natsuki Sugano
Natsuki Sugano

After a rather uneventful 2018, Yoshitaka Yamaya was back to reprising roles in anime series.

2019 kicked off with a reprisal of his role as the cheerful Natsuki Sugano in the anime series Stand My Heroes: Piece of Truth.

2020 kicked off with the news that Yamaya was joining FIRST WIND PRODUCTION, a talent agency affiliated with WITH LINE.

Muku Sakisaka anime
Muku Sakisaka

After the success that the smartphone game had, A3! was greenlit for an anime adaptation (that ended up split into two seasons to cover all troupes).

A3! Season Autumn & Winter premiered in 2020. Yamaya reprised his role as Muku Sakisaka, quiet member of the Summer Troupe.

Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen

He was then cast in the popular action anime series, Jujutsu Kaisen. He voiced Junpei Yoshino, a supporting character in the series that is quite negative and reserved.

The rest of the year was really tough for all seiyuu and Yamaya was definitely caught in the middle of the big issue. Covid-19 closed Japan entirely and due to that, the animation industry came to a complete halt in March 2020, extending until June 2020.

Many seiyuu saw themselves without any work in the Autumn and Winter seasons and that was exactly what happened to Yoshitaka Yamaya. He did not get any roles in 2020 beyond Muku in the A3! anime series and Junpei in Jujutsu Kaisen.

2021 was a year of role reprisals and some minor and supporting roles with very little spotlight.

Itsuki Kawasumi
Itsuki Kawasumi

2022 kicked off with a supporting role in the anime series Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 2.

He voiced Itsuki Kawasumi, one of the four Legendary Heroes summoned in Melromarc.

He’s slightly arrogant and while his initial intentions were good, getting praise for his deeds – by any means necessary – after shifting his focus to a dangerous place. This is a performance that is impressing many people (and let’s not forget, this is a supporting role)!

He is set to voice Iori Hida in the upcoming anime series, Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning.

Other anime series in which he voiced characters during this period of time include:

  • Nana Maru San Batsu (2017)
  • Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru – Makuai Kaisouroku (2017)
  • Ikemen Sengoku: Toki wo Kakeru ga Koi wa Hajimaranai (2017)
  • Black Clover (2017 – 2021)
  • Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku (2018)
  • Hakumei to Mikochi (2018)
  • Senjuushi (2018)

Radio

His sassy side and variety hosting chops ended up being perfect for his work in radio. Since his debut, Yoshitaka Yamaya has hosted/co-hosted, and/or guest on several radio shows.

Whenever he is in the lead, you can expect for the radio show to be conducted in an extremely professional yet fun way. When there are guests, things change around from him pushing the buttons of the guests to him dealing with guests that are immune to his antics.

Some of his radio show appearances include (list is not exhaustive):

MAN TWO MONTH RADIO Yoshitaka Yamaya’s Jinsei Yama aritani ari (2015 – 2016)

MAN TWO MONTH RADIO Yoshitaka Yamayas Jinsei Yama aritani ari

In 2015, Yamaya was invited to be the host of MAN TWO MONTH RADIO, show in which seiyuu can handle their own radio show for two months before switching to the next seiyuu.

Yoshitaka Yamaya was a personality from December 2015 to January 2016.

In MAN TWO MONTH RADIO 山谷祥生の人生山あり谷あり (MAN TWO MONTH RADIO Yoshitaka Yamaya’s Jinsei Yama aritani ari), fans got to listen to Yamaya learning how to host a radio show, as well as send in questions and comments about one theme for Yamaya to discuss or give his opinion.

Yoshitaka Yamaya IDOLMASTER SideM Radio 315Night

Yoshitaka both hosted and guested on the radio show “IDOLMASTER SideM Radio 315Night!” from 2015 to 2016.

The show focused on promoting SideM’s units and their music releases but it was also a place for a lot of fun conversations and crazy shenanigans.

Legend of Yamaya (2016 – 2017)

Legend of Yamaya

In 2016, Yamaya was back to hosting his own radio show. “Legend of Yamaya” was a radio show in which Yamaya devoted himself to becoming a “legendary voice actor” by facing several challenges.

The show started airing in 2016 and wrapped up in 2017.

Café Glass Slipper (2017 -)

Cafe glass slipper

In 2017, Yamaya teamed up with fellow seiyuu Tomohito Takatsuka for the radio show, Café Glass Slipper.

For this radio show, the duo is all about creating the best experience possible for their listeners.

The show has love, tea time, and prince challenge corners (among many others), all creating a regal and caring vibe.

  • “Sleeping Night”, radio that will allow you to sleep soundly from tonight (2019 – 2021).

Games

When it comes to games, Yoshitaka has been quite active since his debut, having quite an interesting number of roles under his belt.

Fans will more commonly voice characters that are young. Within those young characters, he tends to voice both ends of the spectrum: quiet and energetic ones.

His first role in games was in “Fairy Fencer F” in 2013. From that point on, Yoshitaka has consistently been getting roles in games of varying genres (going from otome to fighting, acting, RPGs, and more).

He’s lent voice to a couple of interesting characters such as:

Kyosuke Aoi in THE IDOLM@STER SideM (2015 -) and SideM LIVE ON ST@GE! (2017 -)

Kyosuke Aoi game

In 2015, Yoshitaka Yamaya joined the cast of the popular idol franchise, THE IDOLM@STER SideM.

The game, of the same name, was released in 2017 and mixed elements of music, story (incredibly toned down), and idol nurturing/farming.

He voices Kyosuke Aoi, one of the twins in the energetic idol group, W.

Kyosuke is extremely talented focusing on his intellectual prowess to devise interesting strategies.

Muku Sakisaka in A3! (2017 -)

Muku Sakisaka

In 2017, Yoshitaka was cast as Summer Troupe’s Muku Sakisaka in the popular smartphone game A3!.

Muku is passionate about shoujo manga. In comparison with the rest of the members of the Summer Troupe, he is extremely quiet and reserved.

However, he is extremely talented as an actor, being an important piece for the Summer Troupe. This was one of the very first roles in games to attract a lot of attention to Yamaya.

He also voiced characters in the following games (the list is not exhaustive):

  • Assassination Classroom: Koro-sensei Dai Houimou (2015),
  • Touken Ranbu (2015),

  • Hero’s Park (2019),
  • Lost Kiss (2020),

between many more.

Narration / Dubbing

Narration and dubbing are two fields of work in which Yamaya is not as active as other seiyuu.

At the moment of writing this feature, he only has 3 dubbing credits to his name: Hank Zipzer, Utopia, and Astrolology ~Weird 12 Constellations~.

Drama CDs

As far as drama CDs go, Yoshitaka Yamaya has lent his talents to some, especially those serving as a tie-up to anime series or games.

Aside from those, he is active in the BL (boys’ love) scene, having a couple of credits there.

Some of his credits include:

  • Isshukan Friends,

Music

When it comes to music, Yoshitaka Yamaya never made a solo debut however, he’s shown plenty of times that he’s got the chops as a singer.

He is known for his high notes and ability to harmonize with anyone – from the most technical of singers to those with unique singing tones. While extremely underrated, he is one of the 4 power vocals in the lyrical pop group, Growth.

He’s best known for being part of the following 2D music groups:

W (2014 – )

In 2015, Yamaya joined the cast of THE IDOLM@STER‘s male version, IDOLM@STER SideM.

He was cast as Jiro Yamashita, currently one of the most popular groups from the IDOLM@STER SideM franchise. Takeru Kikuchi completes the lineup for this unit.

Aside from these singles, W has participated in several cross-unit and solo song projects within the franchise.

So far, the duo participated in several IDOLMASTER SideM live shows:

MEDICODE (2015 – )

MEDICODE, visual-kei band part of the FlyMe project, a collaboration between seiyuu and visual-kei artists, included popular names in the cast, namely Soma Saito, Takuya Eguchi, Yuichiro Umehara, and Yoshitaka Yamaya.

Although Yoshitaka is a member of the cast, the front-man in all the releases was Soma Saito, with Yoshitaka solely being featured in one of the drama CDs released up until date.

medicode gabby 1

The band went on hiatus in the same year they debuted, only making a comeback later in 2017 with the second single “GABBY“, a single that changed a bit the gears for MEDICODE, embracing a dramatic rock sound.

Growth (2015 -)

Growth

There is no other group within 2D music projects that has a sound like Growth.

This is one of the most unique – in terms of both sound and chemistry – groups out there, always delivering top-tier, insanely technical performances on stage.

Growth is a group para of ALIVE in the TSUKIPRO franchise. The group is signed to the fictional idol talent agency Tsukino Production.

The group debuted in 2015, joining SOARA on the ALIVE side of the franchise.

The quartet consists of leader Mamoru Fujimura (CV: Junta Terashima), Koki Eto (CV: Shunichi Toki), Kensuke Yaegashi (CV: Yoshitaka Yamaya), and Ryota Sakuraba (CV: Daiki Yamashita).

The group has songs by Akira Takizawa (John Zeroness) and is best known for its cinematic sound that lends a lot of elements from Irish folk music.

As a result, their sound is adventurous, and fantasy-inspired sound, with genuinely technical vocal parts as the members are required to sing in a lyrical way.

Growth showcases not only one of the most unique sounds in the 2.5D idol market but also some of the richest and most entertaining performances fans can enjoy from TSUKIPRO‘s units.

Since its debut, Growth has been the most challenging group on the vocal end, always with a sound that is epic and intense while with a surprising delicate twist underneath.

Packed with powerful vocals, this unit is also known for its 100% synced choruses and flawless harmonizations that will bring chills down your spine.

Mahou no Kizuna” song released in October 2017 and featured as one of the 4 opening themes for TSUKIPRO THE ANIMATION, is regarded by their fans as Growth‘s best song.

The group has participated in all CD series in the franchise. Those include:

As far as character songs go, Yoshitaka Yamaya has performed as Kensuke in the following CDs:

When it comes to live performances, Growth has performed in several franchise live events. The unit’s live debut was at TSUKIPRO LIVE 2016 in Nakano.

A year later, in 2017, the group performed at A.L.P -ALIVE PARTY 2017 SUMMER-, event specifically featuring ALIVE’s groups: SOARA and Growth.

In 2018 and now following the premiere of the first season of TSUKIPRO THE ANIMATION, the franchise held the big live event TSUKIPRO LIVE 2018 SUMMER CARNIVAL.

And in 2022, after 3 years of no live events for the franchise – due to Covid-19 -, Growth was back on stage at TSUKIPRO LIVE 2022 WINTER CARNIVAL.

&6allein (2017 – 2019)

6allein e1503347665299 1

Alongside fellow seiyuu Shunichi Toki, Tatsuya Tokutake, Takeru Kikuchi, and Takahide Ishii, Yamaya was part of &6allein, seiyuu unit signed with Marine Entertainment (D.A.T, ELEKITER ROUND 0, TAKA, etc) that prided itself in having a complete lineup comprised of seiyuu from the same talent agency –  WITH LINE.

The group debuted during the summer of 2017 (June) with the single UNLOCK☆START!!!.

Alongside Shunichi Toki, Yoshitaka Yamaya was one of the pillars of the group vocally. He brought the experience and renown from his performances with Growth and did an amazing job in this group, easily standing out from everyone else.

The group suffered some lineup changes in October 2017 with the departure of Yusuke Miyamoto.

allein 1

&6allein made their comeback in November with the second single -LIVED-/A:LIVE-, a single a completely different sonority and dark vibe.

The group has been steadily showing that they have talent, the only issue lies with Marine Entertainment‘s lack of PR skills to promote this group.

6allein 1

The group changed its image in 2018 and released its 1st full-length album, With You.

&6allein upgraded their sound and re-recorded their early songs with the current 5-member lineup.

Still in the same year, they held their first live show &6allein 1st Live With You and a fan meeting &6allein Fan meeting 2018 Part of Me.

6allein 1

The group announced a change of sound and looks in 2019. Putting heavy synth-driven instrumentalization, &6allein embraced ballads and slow-tempo pop tunes, showcasing a matured side.

Unfortunately, due to Tatsuya Tokutake’s retirement from the seiyuu industry in 2019, the group was later disbanded.

Luna Lore (2017 – 2018)

luna lore 1

In 2017, Yoshitaka Yamaya joined the cast of the ambitious idol project, Star Revo. He joined Luna Lore, pop outfit consisting of Yoji Ikuta, Shoya Chiba, and Yoshitaka Yamaya.

The group never got to release their CDs but contributed songs for the several Best Off albums that wrapped up the franchise as distribution of the game was announced back in 2018.

The song, Ikenai Himitsu was instantly a favorite among fans.

7Colors (2017 -)

7Colors

During the summer of 2017 (July), 7Colors were announced as one of the two new units to debut part of a new smartphone game, “Anidol Colors“.

7Colors, unit consisting of Yuto SuzukiTaku YashiroJunta TerashimaYoshitaka YamayaYusuke ShiraiShunichi Toki, and Junya Enoki, debuted in September with the single “Ride on☆ 7Dream“.

7Colors (C) Voltage Inc.

For this unit, Enoki performs in a sweet, slightly higher tone than usual, matching his character’s youthful yet cool vibe.

Ride on☆ 7Dream ended up being a trainwreck of a release filled with tacky melodies, overcrowded instrumentalization, and subpar performances that overshadowed the talented vocals within the group, including Enoki‘s.

In 2018, the group released the single “Original Colors“.

7colors welcome to our land 1

Late in 2018, and after the game was renewed for a new season7colors released a digital single, “Welcome to Our LAND!”.

Summer Troupe (2017 – )

A3! Summer Troupe

Still in the same year, Yoshitaka Yamaya joined the franchise that would end up dominating 2017, A3!.

He voices Muku Sakisaka, actor with a reserved personality and surprising strength.

The Summer Troupe consists of Takuya Eguchi (leader), Shunichi Toki, Yoshitaka Yamaya, Daisuke Hirose, Tomoru Akazawa and Tasuku Hatanaka.

The summer troupe has participated in all EP series so far. Those include “First” (2017), “Blooming” (2017), “VIVID” (2018), “BRIGHT” (2019) and “SUNNY” (2022).

Yoshitaka has participated in the franchise’s cast events.

He attended A3! First Blooming Festival (2018), A3! SECOND Blooming FESTIVAL (2019), A3! THIRD Blooming FESTIVAL (2021) and A3! BLOOMING LIVE 2022.

All events included talk and live performance corners.

In 2019, Yoshitaka Yamaya teamed up with Tomohito Takatsuka to debut as the princely seiyuu unit, glass slipper.

The group stems from the radio show that the duo hosts “Yoshitaka Yamaya and Tomohito Takatsuka’s Café Glass Slipper radio”.

The group’s debut single was “The glass slipper“. It featured a set of regal, bright songs as well as a couple of dummyhead mic tracks.

Variety

Sassy, crafty, and more often than not extremely eccentric, Yoshitaka Yamaya is always a bundle of fun to find in variety shows.

He’s best known for participating in Marine Entertainment variety shows, having gone from a guest to narrator or even the games master.

Some of the best features in variety shows include:

Diamond no Ace All Star game II (2016)

Yoshitaka Yamaya Diamond no Ace All Star game II

In 2016, Yamaya was invited to play at Diamond no Ace‘s second All Star game.

Representing Inashiro and with previous experience playing baseball, Yamaya was pointed out as the true ace of the team.

However, after several outs and a relentless opposing team that was led in the score by Tatsuhisa Suzuki and Soma Saito, Inashiro lost the semi-finals game.

Stamy channel (2017 – 2019)

stamai channel yoshiki yoshitaka

In the summer of 2017, Coly opened a youtube channel to promote the puzzle/romance game Stand My Heroes.

Chosen to host Stamy channel were Yoshitaka Yamaya and Yoshiki Nakajima. The show focused on promoting the game and its features by having the hosts play some levels of the game with specific gimmicks, draw some of the game’s cards, among many other things.

After hitting certain subscriber thresholds, the show received upgrades such as the background, table, microphones, sofa, pillows, and the famous “Chikapi” as well as welcoming guests on the show.

Stamy channel was so popular that it counted with a second season before wrapping up in the summer of 2019.

Real treasure hunt in Yokohama (2017)

1st guest: Natsuki Hanae

In 2017, Yoshitaka Yamaya participated in Marine Entertainment’s well-known Treasure Hunt variety show.

While all teams were focused on going from point A to B and completing the challenges, team Yoshitaka Yamaya – Yuma Uchida was lost in the earlier stages. It seemed that the more they walked, the less there was to do for them.

That’s when they changed their strategy and started following other teams, much to the other team’s annoyance (and the your entertainment).

The duo ended up picking up the pacing and, by the time the game was close to wrapping up, they were close to the lead, ultimately not winning because of another team’s swiftness and outstanding teamwork.

Futsal Seiyuu (2019)

Marine Entertainment’s treasure hunt variety returned in 2019 under a new format, with a different lineup and dynamic.

Since 2019, Shohei Komatsu has been participating in Marine Entertainment’s Cop and Robbers’ style variety, Jinro Battle. He has participated in various recorded (during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020) and live editions.

And for all the sessions, his quick wits, critical thinking, and acting skills were all put to the test as he tried his best to deceive or, on the other side, find who the robber was.

Some of his participations include: Jinro Battle lies and the truth 2020 FEBRUARYJinro Battle lies and the truth 2019 AUGUSTJinro Battle – Jinro VS Kaito, and Jinro Battle THE NIGHTMARE.

Seiyuu Bowling Grandprix 6 (2020)

He was featured alongside Yusuke ShiraiKodai Sakai, and the master of ceremonies, Yutaka Baletta.

Seiyuu Bowling Grandprix was created by Seiyuu Grandprix, a well-known seiyuu magazine, and it counts with a pretty unique concept: a bowling tournament with punishments, skill challenges, and free talk corners.

Facts

Admires Jun Fukuyama

Yoshitaka Yamaya said in an interview early on in his career that he admires Jun Fukuyama. He longs to be like Fukuyama as a voice actor.

Extremely athletic

He has played several sports during his time as a student such as swimming, kendo, baseball, soccer and handball. He continues to be active, playing futsal and exercising in the gym.

Loves fashion and has designed clothes for a Japanese brand

Yoshitaka Yamaya LIVERTINE AGE

It is well known among Yoshitaka’s fans that he loves fashion, putting a great deal into it no matter how seemingly “unimportant” an appearance of his may look like.

In 2018, Yoshitaka Yamaya collaborated with the Japanese apparel brand LIVERTINE AGE. This is a brand that actively collaborates with seiyuu and stage actors to promote their products.

Yamaya designed t-shirts for this brand.

Enjoys pushing the buttons of Shunichi Toki

While Shunichi Toki is well known for his calm, attentive self, however, there’s someone that knows exactly how to tick him off and shed that quiet persona from him fellow seiyuu and friend, Yoshitaka Yamaya.

During one special Anidol event in September 2017, Toki was invited as a guest.

Yamaya was particularly active and upbeat during that broadcast, making all kinds of background noises while both Terashima and Toki were speaking.

After a continuous streak of background animal noises and some comments about his character that put him close to a mental breakdown, Toki turned around to Yamaya with a smile on his face and said  “Could you please shut up?“.

Be it on this event or others in which both are together, take for example A3!‘s Summer Troupe nico nico events -, both are always bickering, mostly because Yamaya likes to tease him, often leading to hilarious reactions/situations.

A reminder that they are not only seiyuu agency mates (WITH LINE) but they are also label and group mates – for &allein, 7Colors, and Growth.

If music is thought-provoking or deep, you may find her writing almost essays (not limited to, but it happens a lot with Soma Saito's music). She's the producer and host of the male seiyuu-centric podcast, SEIYUU LOUNGE (see Spotify link in this profile).
