Seiyuu

Ono’s path towards becoming a voice actor was heavily influenced by Kisho Taniyama (KISHOW). Originally, Ono wanted to become a football player.

While in high school, Ono ended up suffering an injury that would end up hindering his performance throughout his career should he want to pursue his career as a football player so, unfortunately, he had to put aside his big dream and find something else to pursue.

While attending Waseda University, Ono started to have an interest in radio work as an alternative to his dream of becoming a football player.

One day in 2003, a friend of his asked him to record an episode of the anime series Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. A song performed by the series’ protagonist – voiced by Kishow – played. It was the spark for Ono’s admiration for Kishow.

from an anime series and Kishow was there. Ono was transfixed on him. From that point on, Ono turned into a big Kishow fan, even attending anime events to which he was confirmed to appear at.

Ono eventually got to meet his idol at one of those events and… it was then and there that he decided that he wanted to become a voice actor.

2006 – 2011

Making a name for himself and first main roles

Yuki Ono made his debut as a seiyuu in 2006 under Atomic Monkey.

From that year up until 2009, he got several minor roles in anime series such as Gintama, Sgt. Frog, Soreike! Anpanman, The Good Witch of the West, Saint October, Saint Beast, Da Capo II, Itazura na Kiss, among many more.

Kazuichi Arai
Kazuichi Arai

In 2009, Yuki Ono would get his first supporting role with quite a lot of the spotlight on top. He was cast as Kazuichi Arai (or Pin Senpai) in the romance anime series, Kimi ni Todoke.

Arai is an arrogant temporary homeroom teacher that is important to the story due to his familiarity with the series’ protagonist Shouta. This was a character that ended up showcasing Ono’s skills when it came to comedy skits as well as with a good balance with serious scenes.

The anime spawned 2 seasons in which Arai frequently appeared, adding both a goofy and mature twist to the story.

After several minor roles, it took 2 years for Yuki Ono to get yet another role that put a spotlight on his acting skills.

Kaname Tsukahara
Kaname Tsukahara

In 2011, Ono was cast as Kaname Tsukahara, one of the main characters in the drama/slice-of-life anime series, Kimi to Boku..

Ono’s acting was praised across the board as he gave life to the tsundere and short-tempered Student Council President and Class Representative in his second-year class.

His nuanced performance as Tsukahara earned him the Best Supporting Actor at the 7th Seiyuu Awards.

The anime spawned 2 seasons, being praised for its character development and stellar voice acting.

Other anime series in which he voiced characters during this period of time include:

2012 – 2013

Shot to fame

This would be a crucial point in Yuki Ono’s career as a voice actor.

Taiga Kagami
Taiga Kagami

In 2012, Ono was cast as Taiga Kagami in the popular basketball anime series, Kuroko no Basket and with that, he got his first leading role in a major anime production.

Kagami is the ace and power forward of Seirin High aiming at becoming the best, defeating the Generation of Miracles (basketball players that were exceptional at their positions and were once a team).

He has an aggressive, borderline intimidating vibe however Kagami is ambitious, determined, and passionate about basketball as well as his teammates. He wants to challenge the best and beat them. That is what fuels him throughout the series and Ono’s focused performance made the character interesting at all times.

If there is a character that fans instantly associate with Yuki Ono is Taiga Kagami. This is also the character that opened the doors for Ono to start getting more and more leading roles in anime series.

He reprised the role from 2012 until 2015 in its various seasons, specials and movies.

Zenkichi Hitoyoshi
Zenkichi Hitoyoshi

Also in the same year, Ono was cast as Zenkichi Hitoyoshi in the action/comedy anime series Medaka Box.

Zenkichi Hitoyoshi is the male protagonist of the series, a character with good observation skills, something that makes his internal monologues essential for viewers of the anime series to understand what is happening (as he almost takes the role of the narrator).

Shirou Ashiya
Shirou Ashiya

In 2013, Ono was back with yet another leading role, this time in the comedy anime series, Hataraku Mahou-Sama!.

He was cast as Shirou Ashiya, one of Satan’s Demon Generals that ended up also being transported to modern-day Japan.

Seeing as he is extremely loyal to Satan, he ends up being in charge of household duties as well as is active in his search for a way to Satan regain his powers. This was yet another grounded role with hits and bits of comedy and seriousness in the mix, something in which Ono naturally shines.

Kannagi
Kannagi

He was then cast as the series’ hot-blooded and easily annoyed antagonist Kannagi in the anime series, Arata Kangatari. This was a role that strayed away from what Ono had been doing up until then, putting aside comedy in favor of a serious, aggressive performance.

He showed that he can also tackle more serious characters and more than playing righteous protagonists, he can also play antagonists and deliver believable performances that glue fans to the screen.

Dimitrie Vatler edited
Dimitrie Vatler

Although not a leading role, still in 2013, Ono was cast in the action anime Strike the Blood as Dimitrie Vatler, an extremely arrogant high-ranking vampire with twisted taste and ambiguous morality, acting only out of boredom.

Kyuuma Inuzuka
Kyuuma Inuzuka

Another supporting role that stood out in 2013 was that of the dependable and passionate Kyuuma Inuzuka in the action/mecha anime series Valvrave the Liberator.

Jun Isashiki
Jun Isashiki

Sports anime ended up being one of the places in which fans of Yuki Ono could find him with some ease. In 2013 he was cast in the popular baseball anime series, Diamond no Ace.

He voiced Jun Isashiki, a third-year center fielder at Seidou High School. This is, easily, one of the loudest and most intense characters in the anime series, ending up being a mood maker on and off the pitch. He’s essential for the team’s defense but he’s also extremely reliable as a hitter.

Before retiring from the team to study for college entrance exams, he was one of the 3 vice captains of the team.

Ono reprised this role from 2013 until 2019 in its various seasons and specials.

Other anime series in which he voiced characters during this period of time include:

  • Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (2012)
  • Hiyokoi (2012)
  • Devil Survivor 2: The Animation (2013)
  • Beast Saga (2013)
  • Ark IX (2013)
  • Da Capo III (2013)
  • Valvrave the Liberator (2013)
  • Yozakura Quartet ~Hana no Uta~ (2013)

  • Gin no Saji (2013)
  • Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: Memory of Eden (2013)

2014 – 2017

Turning into a respected voice actor

The fame and popularity that Yuki Ono got from his role as Taiga Kagami in Kuroko no Basket subdued in the following years, with Ono being back to voicing a few characters per season, of course, still with a couple of long-running roles in sports anime to complement those.

Ono was back to voicing supporting characters, with most of those testing his acting skills, justifying why he’s one of the best talents among seiyuu.

Moral Hamatora
Moral

He was cast as Moral in the anime series, Hamatora The Animation. This was yet another antagonist role however, for a change, there were more depth and contrived emotions going on for this character.

Ono was voicing a psychotic, apathetic, and dangerously intelligent character that believed he was a messiah.

Masayuki Hori
Masayuki Hori

In a contrasting way, Ono was cast in the comedy/romance anime series Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun as Masayuki Hori, one of the series’ most beloved characters.

Hori is organized, calm and collected – at least, he appears – and is a diligent member of the drama club. Throughout the series not only does he have to deal with others that want to slack off, but he is also struggling with love for one of his friends.

Ono got to once again showcase his comedic + serious twist on characters, ending up making Hori not just another supporting character but one you’re rooting for and look forward to seeing in the series.

Juugo Yama
Juugo Yama

Still in 2014, he was cast as the level-headed Juugo Yama, the main character in the adventure/comedy anime series Nanana’s Buried Treasure.

Chikage Rokujou
Chikage Rokujou

A year later, Yuki Ono joined the cast of the popular action/mystery anime, Durarara!!.

He joined the series for Durarara!!x2 Shou (2015), Ten (2015), and Ketsu (2016) as Chikage Rokujou, leader of a biker gang.

Determined, stubborn, and despite his ladies’ man vibe, he is extremely chivalrous towards women, going as far as defending them from abuse, and making sure abusers pay the price.

Isami Aldini
Isami Aldini

Still in the same year, Ono joined the cast of the popular cooking/ecchi anime series Shokugeki no Souma. He voiced the passionate and gentle Isami Aldini, one of the students of Tootsuki Culinary Academy.

Josuke Higashikata
Josuke Higashikata

In 2016, Yuki Ono would get a role that would be beloved by fans of the franchise in question. He was cast as Josuke Higashikata in the popular action anime series, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable.

Ono delivered a stylish performance of the quirky amnesiac, juggling two personalities within himself, one more strategic and the other more emotional. This was a role that showed just how great of a voice actor Yuki Ono is.

Shou Tokugawa
Shou Tokugawa

Still in the same year, Ono was cast as Shou Tokugawa in the sports anime, Cheer Danshi!.

The anime didn’t end up being massively well received, instead getting a lukewarm reception both in Japan and overseas but this was yet again another awesome opportunity for Ono to showcase his versatility.

At the same time, he was straying a bit away from his big, loud, and intimidating characters in sports anime, something that helps add depth to his career and shows that he is far from being a one-dimensional voice actor.

Yuusuke Igarashi
Yuusuke Igarashi

The reliable, popular and kind-hearted Yusuke Igarashi in the comedy/romance anime series Watashi ga Motete Dousunda was Ono’s next role.

Igarashi tries his best to win over the protagonist’s love however crazy, unpredictable shenanigans, as well as the competition of 4 people, make it difficult for him, leading to hilarious situations.

Rintaro Tatewaki
Rintaro Tatewaki

He was also cast as the bright and energetic Rintaro Tatewaki in the magic/music anime series Magic-Kyun! Renaissance.

In 2017, Ono saw his workload reduce for the very first time in years. In that year, he only got 6 new roles while reprising his roles in the sports hit series Kuroko no Basket and Diamond no Ace.

Gran Granblue fantasy
Gran

He was cast as Gran, the protagonist in the anime series Granblue Fantasy The Animation, an adaptation of the game Grandblue Fantasy.

The anime had a lukewarm reception despite Ono’s solid performance as Gran, a kind and caring individual that puts others above himself at all times. Due to that, he’s a natural leader, being well trusted by all other characters in the series.

Morihito Arihara
Morihito Arihara

Still in the same year, Ono reprised his role as SOARA’s guitarist Morihito Arihara in Tsukipro The Animation, anime adaptation of the popular 2D music franchise.

Morihito is exactly the type of character you now associate with Yuki Ono: caring, gentle, like an older brother. He’s the member that grounds all members in SOARA, taking care of every single one of them.

  • Servamp (2016)

2018 –

Freelancing consistency

After parting ways with Atomic Monkey, Yuki Ono decided to go freelance and has been so since 2018. While most seiyuu notice their work being reduced to a bare minimum as they go freelance, the opposite happened to Yuki Ono.

Since 2018, Ono has had a streak of solid years of work in anime. Of course, not all characters are leading ones but even the supporting ones have been quite interesting and of some importance to them.

Kogarashi Fuyuzora
Kogarashi Fuyuzora

In that year, Ono was back to voicing characters with a delinquent vibe about them. The first role to fit that bill was Kogarashi Fuyuzora in the comedy/ecchi OVA series Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san.

Despite his intimidating looks, Fuyuzora is calm and collected as well as a kind individual. His friends are his priority and he’ll go to great lengths to protect them.

He would end up reprising his role from the OVA series when a full anime series premiered in the summer of 2018.

Jinzaburou Kuchii
Jinzaburou Kuchii

He then voiced Jinzaburou Kuchii in the historic anime Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion. This anime focused on depicting the beginning of samurai in Japan as well as the implications of the Mongol invasion.

Romio Inuzuka
Romio Inuzuka

He then voiced Romio Inuzuka in the comedy/romance anime series Boarding School Juliet. Inuzuka is a tough and brash character that tends to solve most of his problems with his fists, however, there is more to him.

He’s kind and funny, not to mention that, with this story being a rom-com approach to the Romeo & Juliet story, he’s in love with someone from a rival family and has to hide it, otherwise he’ll be considered a traitor.

Junta Azumaya
Junta Azumaya

In a change of tone and even of anime style, Yuki Ono reprised his role as the cheerful and angelic Junta Azumaya in the anime adaptation of the popular BL manga, Dakaretai Otoko 1.

Itsuki Yuge
Itsuki Yuge

Before the end of the year, he was cast as Itsuki Yuge in the fantasy/romance anime series Conception.

Koga Oogami
Koga Oogami

Passionate, ambitious, and competitive, Koga Oogami is a member of the rock/jazz group UNDEAD in the anime adaptation of the popular game Ensemble Stars!!.

This is yet another character voiced by Ono with a tough exterior that is actually extremely kind and caring at its core.

Louis Beastars
Louis

In 2019, Yuki Ono was cast as Louis in the drama anime Beastars. This is, as of late, one of the most complex characters Ono has voiced.

Louis is arrogant and has many complexes that make him sound paranoid at times but he can also be extremely manipulative at others.

Kufa Vampir
Kufa Vampir

The year wrapped up with a leading role as the calm and collected Kufa Vampir in the fantasy anime series, Assassins Pride.

Satoru Pet anime
Satoru

2020 kicked off with a role in the mind-bending anime series, Pet.

John H. Watson
John H. Watson

He was then cast as Dr. John H. Watson, Sherlock Holmes’ roommate and assistant, in the action anime Moriarty the Patriot.

Ono’s performance highlighted the highly righteous moral code of the character, making John Watson more than a side character in this series.

He ended up reprising his role in the anime’s two cours (2020 and 2021).

Leocadio Wohler
Leocadio Wöhler

Jirou Ogasawara
Jirou Ogasawara

A year later, Ono was back with a supporting role as Jirou Ogasawara in the romance anime Sasaki to Miyano.

Please know that the list of drama CDs in Ono’s repertoire is quite extensive. As such in this article only a couple of those will be mentioned. For an extended look at his repertoire, I welcome you to check his Japanese Wikipedia page.

Music

As far as music goes, Yuki Ono is quite active. He’s not the type of seiyuu to be everywhere when it comes to 2D music projects but you will find him in very specific projects and you’ll instantly notice that he fits those like a glove.

One of the most respected seiyuu of his generation, Yuki Ono is a behemoth on the vocal end.

With a wide vocal range that will make your jaw drop, an emotional range that will make you feel the songs you’re listening to, as well as a sweet baritone voice that will always soothe you, Yuki Ono is a real gem in the seiyuu industry.

Up his sleeve, he’s got a powerful vibrato, beautiful falsetto, and a good control over his head voice. He’s versatile, performing a wide variety of music genres and fitting those like it’s second nature to him.

He’s best known for his awesome job with Tsukipro’s SOARA, perfectly complementing Toshiyuki Toyonaga as both shared, between 2015 to 2017, lead vocal duties for the group. Since 2017, the lines have been equally shared with all 5 members, which took away a bit of the spotlight from him.

He’s also part of Ensemble Stars!!’s UNDEAD, one of the franchise’s most popular groups. They are a rock band with a dramatic vibe and a 4-piece lineup that works in perfect synergy.

You can also find him performing traditional Japanese music with a bit of pop and rock on top of I-chu’s Tenjyou Tenge.

All in all, Yuki Ono is known as a versatile singer with a good vocal range and a whole lot of talent.

Solo career

Yuki Ono made his solo debut with Lantis in 2015. And in 4 years, Ono released 3 CDs (each released on his birthday).

onoyu 1

Ono’s adventure as a solo artist had everything to go right: he was popular, his singing skills were (and still are) top-notch, he’s a singer-songwriter and Lantis was backing him.

What could go wrong?

Everything. Unfortunately.

cd 01 1
Party Man

He released his debut CD “Party Man” in 2015.

Despite the awful concept and the mess that the title track was, “Party Man” (the album) managed to showcase Ono’s versatility as a singer. He found himself performing Jazz, soul, enka, disco, Latin, pop, rock, and ballad while tapping into both his cleaning singing and rapping.

Yuki Ono as a singer was showing his cards however, the title track – song that should be a summary of the album, the best track in it – was easily one of the messiest tracks in his repertoire. Yes, it attracted attention but not to watch the music video or listen to the full song. It was to be made fun of.

Party Man 2

In 2016, Ono released his 2nd mini-album “Party Man 2“. And it was the same old same.

Ranging from enka to bossa nova even to electronica and country rock, Yuki Ono seemed to be on a mission to try everything he could on this mini-album.

The instrumentals and lyrics were all over the place, ranging from poor to high quality, with nothing particularly standing out for being a complete package of good music, lyrics, and performance.

Party Man 3

The last release with Lantis was “Party Man 3“, album that absolutely took things to a new extreme, one in which Ono was no longer being taken seriously as a solo artist.

Lantis gave him… a caveman concept for the CD.

Everything about his solo career with Lantis was dreadful.

Little to no promotion of his music on social media channels, no features on magazines, no radio interviews, ludicrous concepts – they had Yuki Ono dressed as a caveman man for one of the mini-albums – and the quality of the music?

Bad for the most part.

For a singer as good and talented as Yuki Ono, the music label opted for not even giving him freedom to write and compose his songs, instead performing the music the label wanted and with the concepts they saw fit for his “persona”.

Leaving Lantis and going indie

Yuki Ono made his solo debut with Lantis in 2015 and bid goodbye to the label around 2018 – 2019. Why?

There is no definitive answer – it was never stated, as a matter of fact, Yuki Ono parting ways with Lantis wasn’t even worthy of a news article, which is strange.

It was a shame – yet expected – that, 3 mini-albums later, weak sales numbers and a whole bad image around Yuki Ono, he’d eventually part ways with Lantis and go indie.

And what a change that was for him.

He’s performing the music he likes with an image and concept that isn’t fabricated. He’s writing his own lyrics, pitching in how he wants his songs instrumentals wise and even bringing guest lyricists to his songs. He’s free from bad artist management and having a good time.

Yuki Ono is in his best moment as a solo artist now that he is an indie artist. He may not have the big budget or marketing machine that he had back at Lantis but he’s doing pretty well by himself.

I really do love it when seiyuu show everyone how talented they are and how they do not need a big music label to release music with the same – or even better – quality. He signed with Sanrio and since then he has been releasing music at his own pace.

In 2019 he released “Friend Tree Wonderland” and “Winter Voice Friends”.

For “Winter Voice Friends”, Ono enlisted the help of friends in the seiyuu industry to write lyrics to his songs. Some of those included Yoshimasa Hosoya, Tomokazu Sugita, Toshiyuki Toyonaga and Soma Saito.

The music video for “Mission “CLAUS” ended up impressing with its quality and apparent bump in the budget even in comparison with the one he had at Lantis.

In 2020, he released “KIZUNA Light”.

As an indie solo artist, Yuki Ono embraced pop-rock and started writing his own lyrics.

Did Yuki Ono lose something when transitioning from a major music label to Sanrio – which can be considered a small or indie music label -?

No. He actually regained his freedom and is visibly happy performing his music. He is creating what he wants, in the concepts he wants, when he wants and that is what matters most for an artist.

Yuki Ono has been doing quite the awesome work as an indie solo artist since his departure from Lantis.

Seiyuu units and 2D groups

YUTAKU II (2011 – )

yutaku ii 1

Yuki Ono and Takuya Eguchi teamed up as a unit in 2011. The duo was originally called YUTAKU but changed its name to Yutaku II prior to releasing its debut single “third Wizard / IN FUTURE!!“.

Since its debut, the duo released the following CDs:

  • Brave Quest (2013)
  • take you take me/FRIENDIER (2013)
  • Furi mawase megane fuki (2014)
  • inVy/O・N・O (2014)
  • inVy ~feat.kenzaVrow~ (2014)
  • Team Mate (2015)
  • eternal snow (2015)
  • Melty Snow (2015)
  • Lost angel (2016)
  • Team Yutaku 5th Anniversary remix best album (2016)

Their music featured lyrics and or music written/composed by Yuki Ono and Takuya Eguchi.

Although the seiyuu unit never ended up becoming truly popular, they had a tight following that loved their music, live appearances, events and the sort.

In 2014 along with Rejet and Avex, YUTAKU released a drama CD, as the result of their collaboration, called “Sacrifice” and as if that was not enough they even performed at RejetFes.

Since 2016, the unit hasn’t released any music.

SOARA (2015 -)

SOARA

SOARA consists of Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Yuki Ono, Makoto Furukawa, Taishi Murata and Chiharu Sawashiro.

The group/band made its debut in 2014, joining the TSUKIPRO franchise and quickly establishing itself as the youth pop-rockers that aimed at putting a smile on the fans’ faces.

Early on, the group had an odd dynamic. Toshiyuki Toyonaga and Yuki Ono were the founding members and, for what seemed like half a year, they were supposed to be a duo.

Turns out that, by the end of 2014, TSUKIPRO announced the addition of 3 other members to this band: Makoto Furukawa, Taishi Murata, and Chiharu Sawashiro.

soara 1
SOARA at TSUKIPRO LIVE 2018 SUMMER CARNIVAL

Starting from there the group increasingly added more lines to these three members and now, by the end of 2019, there is an equal distribution of lines among members.

With that change and the realistic passage of time in the TSUKIPRO franchise, the band has been maturing with their sound having recently ditched its youthful vibe in favor of a mature, slightly more serious yet nostalgic style of pop-rock.

Since the group’s debut, Yuki Ono has been featured in all drama CDs and participated in all series within the franchise.

The group has participated in all CD series in the franchise. Those include:

As far as character songs go, Yuki Ono has performed as Morihito in the following CDs:

When it comes to live performances, SOARA has performed in several franchise live events. The unit’s live debut was at TSUKIPRO LIVE 2016 in Nakano.

A year later, in 2017, the group performed at A.L.P -ALIVE PARTY 2017 SUMMER-, event specifically featuring ALIVE’s groups: SOARA and Growth.

In 2018 and now following the premiere of the first season of TSUKIPRO THE ANIMATION, the franchise held the big live event TSUKIPRO LIVE 2018 SUMMER CARNIVAL.

In 2022, after 3 years of no live events for the franchise – due to Covid-19 -, SOARA was back on stage at TSUKIPRO LIVE 2022 WINTER CARNIVAL.

Tenjyou Tenge (2015 -)

Tenjyou Tenge
Tenjyou Tenge

Tenjyou Tenge debuted in 2015, part of I-Chu‘s vast unit lineup. The quartet consisting of Soma Saito, Yuki OnoKei Minegishi and Ryohei Kimura is known for its traditional Japanese songs with poetic lyrics.

With this lineup, Yuki Ono serves as the core of the group, relying on his powerful baritone vocals and versatility to make the group shine on top of its traditional Japanese music instrumentals.

UNDEAD (2015 -)

In 2015, he joined the cast of Ensemble Stars! to voice Koga Oogami, UNDEAD‘s guitarist.

The group features Wataru HatanoToshiki Masuda, and Kei Hosogai and is known for their passionate and dark rock sound as well as their insane popularity within the franchise.

UNDEAD performed live for the first time in 2019 at Ensemble Stars! Starry Stage 2nd in Nippon Budokan.

The group would then impress everyone with mesmerizing performances at Ensemble Stars!! Starry Stage 4th -Star’s Parade- August in 2022.

stirRhythm (2018)

stirrhythm e1539166684514 1

stirRhythm was the main unit in Starry Palette, a mixed media project developed by DMM GAMES.

The project was announced early in 2017 but due to technical issues production was halted, only to be, months later, announced that production had resumed and the project was still alive.

Starry Palette planned to have music releases, a smartphone game, live performances, radio show (Toshiki Masuda and Yuto Suzuki are the hosts), manga, novels, among other things before distribution ended in 2019 and the whole project never got to see the light of day.

stirRhythm consisted of Toshiki Masuda, Yuto Suzuki, Junya Enoki, Shouta Aoi, Keisuke Komoto, Subaru Kimura, Sho Kiriake, Ihara Shin, Yuki Ono.

The group had 15 in-game songs, with some of those having been previously released as bonus content for Dengeki Girls among other otome magazines in Japan.

Kouiten (2019 -)

Kouiten

In 2019, Ono joined the cast of 紅一天 (Kouiten) in the kira-tune franchise. The group featured the vocals of Yuki Ono, Takuma Terashima, and Shun Horie.

Since their debut, the group has released their 1st single 絢爛ファンタジア (Kenran Fantasia) in 2019 and a collaboration CD with RGB-Trinity titled “RGB-Trinity VS Kouiten” in 2020.

Since in 2020, the group as well as the kira-tune franchise went into full radio silence.

FYA’M’ (2021 -)

FYAM

aoppella!? is KLab’s latest original multimedia music project built on the themes of “youth”  and “a cappella”!

The project counts on 2 groups specializing in performing acappella music and representing 2 fictional schools: Otowa Public High School (Lil Happy) and Kanadezaka Private High School (FYA’M’).

The 2 groups: Lil Happy and FYA’M’ have completely different approaches to acappella music, counting with unique lineups.

FYA’M’ is comprised of a well-balanced and versatile lineup.

Among both groups in aoppella!? they were the ones that impressed me the most.

They have a classic acappella lineup core – top, tenor, baritone, bass, percussion – and, to add a bit more depth, added a lead to complement the performer in charge of the “top” parts.

The lineup consists of Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Wataru Urata, Yuki Ono, Takuya Sato, Daiki Hamano, Shugo Nakamura and Yuki Ono.

Kanadezaka001 Maito Coresawa CV Yuki Ono

Yuki Ono is a perfect choice for this lineup.

Owner of a versatile skill set as well as a sweet, warm singing tone, Yuki Ono has been one of the most sought-after voice actors when it comes to 2D/multimedia projects.

He’s extremely underrated and despite some hiccups, while signed to Lantis, he’s been showing more and more of his talents as a singer as an indie solo artist.

He voices Maito CoresawaFYA’M’’s 3rd and lead parts

He shares lead vocal duties with Toshiyuki Toyonaga and rightfully so. He also is in charge of the 3rd part, between baritone and tenor range, for FYA’M’’s songs.

If you are familiar with his voice, you’ll notice that his versatility, power, and emotional range are invaluable assets that make FYA’M’ shine.

FYA’M is all about their whole band soundwith powerful percussion and warm bass vocals – Daiki Hamano and Takuya Sato to an extent – with a contrast coming from the high notes of Toshiyuki Toyonaga and Wataru Urata.

The vocal range that FYA’M’s members can cover is impressively wide.

Toyonaga alone has a massive vocal range that covers tenor up until deep, faux baritone. Yuki Ono, Wataru Urata, and Shugo Nakamura also have wide vocal ranges.

Takuya Sato and Daiki Hamano are more restricted in their vocal range but are so robust in their lower notes, deep tones, and sweet mid-tones that it is hard to find anyone else that could replace them in this group.

FYA’M’s cover of King Gnu’s “Hakujitsu” has a gospel undertone with some influences of barbershop acappella (especially noticeable in the bass vocals’ progression).

Their harmonies are sweet and their percussion gives a lot of life to their performance.

In “Think About U” things change around quite a bit and we got a performance that has a lot of R&B with a punchy bass core.

Once again, on a first listen you’ll notice just how much bass their performance has on both the clean vocals and percussion. On a surprising note, there are rap parts performed by Daiki Hamano that meld seamlessly into the core of the performance.

This is a performance made for baritones with the song exuding a suggestive, alluring yet classy vibe.

For “Come on up, baby”, FYA’M’ didn’t change much about its presentation and sound and this is a big reason why this CD is so good.

This group has an R&B-inspired style of performance that, with their strong bass and percussion section, can shine time and time again.

To listen to them sticking to their style of performance giving off that slightly playfully, slightly alluring vibe, that was already present in their debut single, is a delight to listen to.

For “Come on up, baby”, listeners can expect a lot of bass. That’s at center stage, all singers perform around it but it never ever leaves the stage. Due to that, the performance gives off an extremely warm vibe on top of all that groove.

Toshiyuki Toyonaga brought R&B riffing to “Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow”, cranking up the good vibes in this song, with Yuki Ono and Wataru Urata taking over from there.

This is really a performance that strays away from what FYA’M’ had been doing up until now. There’s no mature allure to their performance this time around, just warmth and good vibes. The soundscape they created by voice alone is one in which you’re sitting by the fireplace, blanket over your shoulders. It is cozy and welcoming, it has a bit of a jolly feeling but doesn’t exaggerate.

Also unique – or should I, surprising – in this performance was Yuki Ono taking a background role. He’s barely in the spotlight for this song but alongside Daiki Hamano and Shugo Nakamura, he’s breathing life into this song either by supporting the high tenors with awesome harmonizations or giving an extra punch to the bass sound for this performance.

Since its debut, the group has participated in 4 CDs:

The group is going to participate in “aoppella!? 4” with the song “Voice, Heart, Body & Soul”.

Shichinin no Charisma (2021 -)

Charisma House

In 2021, Yuki Ono joined the cast of Charisma House.

Under the tagline “Just ordinary boys“, Charisma House is the name of a new 2D music project helmed by EVIL LINE RECORDS (best known for housing the Hypnosis Mic franchise) with an original idea by Dazed CO., LTD.

The cast includes Yuki Ono, Masahiro Yamanaka, Katsumi Fukuhara, Kenta Hosoda, Hyuga Saku, Genki Okawa, and Tomohisa Hashizume.

Charisma House

Ono voices Fumiya Ito, the project’s face.

The project is extremely non-sensical, with the concepts for each music video being an explosion of color and techniques that no other 2D group has.

Charisma House’s group – Shichinin no Charisma (七人のカリスマ) – released its first song “Mecha Mecha Charisma” (めちゃめちゃカリスマ) in 2021.

Following it was the wacky “Charisma Isshukan”.

And then おつカリスマ!忘年会 (Otsu Charisma! Bounenkai).

When it comes to solo tracks, as Fumiya Ito, Yuki Ono has performed “When The Charisma Go Marching In“.

The franchise is going to release its first full-length album “Charisma World” in September 2022.

Variety

Some of the most iconic participations in variety shows include:

Kakihara Tetsuya to Ono Yuki ga, Tottemo Tanoshinja Imashita! (2012)

Kakihara Tetsuya to Ono Yuki ga Tottemo Tanoshinja Imashita

In 2012, Yuki Ono teamed up with fellow male seiyuu Tetsuya Kakihara for a special variety DVD.

柿原徹也と小野友樹が、とっても楽しんじゃいました! (Kakihara Tetsuya to Ono Yuki ga, Tottemo Tanoshinja Imashita!).

The duo went to a park / ZOO to have fun, enjoy the rides, take photos, shop and do archery, all with guests Koutaro Nishiyama and Reona Irie.

Animemashite (2015)

Yuki Ono Yu Hayashi Animemashite 2015

In 2015, Yuki Ono co-hosted TV Tokyo’s Animemashite, a show focused on the anime and seiyuu scenes, with fellow seiyuu Yu Hayashi.

The recording was split into two, with a part of each episode focusing on each seiyuu, their likes, ambitions, and what was the catalyst for them to enter the business.

The show’s concept allowed the seiyuu to interview each other and then interview other guests – that went there to promote their shows and/or music releases.

Fukuyamuscle! (2015)

  • Yuki Ono Fukuyamuscle 1
  • Yuki Ono Fukuyamuscle 2

In 2015, Yuki Ono was invited to join the cast of Jun Fukuyama’s sports variety show “Fukuyamuscle!“.

Alongside Jun Fukuyama, Kenji Nojima, Hirofumi Nojima, Takuya Eguchi, between many others, Yuki Ono showcased just how active and passionate about sports he is.

He was considered the ace in almost all sports that were played in this sports variety show.

Some of the sports played included basketball 3×3, bouldering, keirin, yoga, kabaddi, dodgeball, and futsal.

Real Treasure Hunt at the German Village (2015)

real hunt treasure in the german village in tokyo

As a member of the cast chosen to allegedly, according to the theme, save the world from a curse, Ono was paired with Takuya Eguchi.

From trying to stop Eguchi from deceiving other members, namely Saito and Hatano and somehow leading the game only to lose it, Yuki Ono provided a lot of entertainment during this variety DVD.

Oha Suta! (2016 – 2017)

Yuki Ono Oha Suta

In 2016, Yuki Ono shared regular host duties with Natsuki Hanae on Oha Sta, kids’ morning show that had been previously hosted by Koichi Yamadera.

In 2017, Ono graduated from the show after having been responsible for Tuesdays and Thursdays broadcasts.

Rejet Fes. 2016 – ONLY ONE

rejet fes 2016 toyonaga 3 1
Hosting variety corners alongside Toshiyuki Toyonaga

Almost every Rejet Fes edition has featured Toshiyuki Toyonaga and Yuki Ono as its hosts, however Rejet Fes. 2016 – ONLY ONE is featured here.

Not was this one of the most chaotic editions of Rejet’s annual 4 sessions in a 2-day event, but also because Yuki Ono performed character songs, hosted and acted in the skits from the drama CDs/games he was cast in.

Since the very first edition, the dynamic duo Toyonaga – Ono has been hosting Rejet Fes., making sure all editions are fun, organized – within their chaos – and laidback.

Seiyu Collection – Futari no Code SHOW – Ono Yuki x Akabane Kenji (2018)

In 2018, Yuki Ono and fellow seiyuu, Kenji Akabane, teamed up for Seiyu Collection, variety show that has at its core, a fashion battle between popular seiyuu.

A theme is given and both have to come up with an outfit that fits the theme and go shopping for it. Aside from the battle portion of the show, the two seiyuu talk about fashion, their go-to style, off-duty styles as well as a more casual themes.

In 2019, Yuki Ono teamed up with fellow seiyuu Showtaro Morikubo for Seiyuu Hyakunen Shokudo vol.3.

Facts

Was originally going to be a football player

While Yuki Ono was attending high school, he was active as a football player. He ended up being scouted by J-League’s Shimizu S-Pulse and everything seemed to be smiling for him to become a professional football player.

Unfortunately, Ono suffered a bone fracture that made it impossible to healthily pursue his dream. He still does a lot of exercise and even plays futsal as shown during Fukuyama’s sports variety show Fuyamuscle!.

Was an excellent student

Yuki Ono mentioned in an interview around the time of Kuroko no Basket that he used to be a good student to the point that he used to have a part-time tutoring other students in all subjects.

Due to his background as a football player, Ono was sometimes a football coach.

Is a fashion designer

Yuki Ono FAVOLC

In 2021, Yuki Ono joined FAVOLC as one of its designers.

FAVALOC is an apparel brand active online that fuses various creative and fashion trends that Japan is proud of and delivers those to the world, taking inspiration from anime, voice actors, and subcultures.

He’s a creator of the brand, in charge of designing the collection, WAGASI.

KISHOW fanboy

Yuki Ono KISHOW

While Yuki Ono was attending college, he became a big fan of Kisho Taniyama (as well as GRANRODEO).

According to Ono for Girls Style online magazine (the magazine no longer exists), after having a chance to meet him face to face at an anime event, and following Ono’s injury that made it so that football was no longer a dream he could pursue, he was inspired to join the seiyuu industry.

Since the day he met Kishow, he’s never changed the wallpaper on his phone, something fellow seiyuu tend to joke about.

They would cross paths for the very first time – both as voice actors – in Kuroko no Basket in 2012, something that ended up being wholesome as Ono was all smiles and fanboying whenever he got to interact with Kishow on the cast events. Kishow however mentioned in some interviews around that time that he found it strange that Ono always acted really reserved around him, especially when he had invited Kishow for a drink but then… he did nothing, just stared at him.

Since then, Ono and Kishow have been close friends.

Part of… AKBN84

akbn84 1
AKBN84

This is a running joke between 1984-born Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Yuki Ono, Ryohei Kimura, Marina Inoue, Kenji Akabane, and Yoshino Nanjo.

AKBN84 (Akabane 84) is a play with the group’s birth year, Akabane’s name, and the massively popular girl group AKB84.

The group of same-year friends often plays around during Fool’s Day and it has turned into a running gag even among fans.

Close friends with many seiyuu

Aside from his friends born in 1984, Ono is well known for being beloved among seiyuu and having a lot of close friendships.

Some of his friends include Tomokazu Sugita, Tomokazu Seki, Yoshimasa Hosoya, Takuya Eguchi, Soma Saito, Takuya Sato and Makoto Furukawa.
