Wataru Komada might be primarily known for his role in Hypnosis Mic however, he is much more than meets the eye.
Wataru Komada
KANJI: 駒田航
BORN: September 5, 1989
OCCUPATION: seiyuu, photographer, singer, radio personality
HEIGHT: 185cm
Wataru Komada was born on September 5, 1989 in Kanagawa, Japan. Although born in Japan, Komada spent a big part of his childhood/teens – 9 years – in Germany where he attended Munich International School. There he learned English, which Komada now says he understands but has little confidence to speak.
He won 81 Produce’s 5th audition excellence award, Culture Broadcasting Award, and the Xing Award in 2011, which led to him joining 81 Produce’s seiyuu school, 81 ACTORS’ STUDIO soon after.
After a couple of years of training, Komada was ready to make his big debut as a seiyuu under 81 Produce, talent agency with which he is still in contract with.
Seiyuu
Wataru Komada made his debut as a seiyuu in 2013. Due to his deep voice and foreigner background – as someone that lived in Germany and speaks / understands a bit of English -, he is often casted as foreigners or rough/brute characters.
Although Komada was showing a lot of promise even among 81 Produce talents picked up in the early 10s, truth is that he is a rare case of a seiyuu that took a long time to take off.
It was only by 2018, with the launch of the unique – at that time – rap meets seiyuu project – now changed to character rap project -, Hypnosis Mic, that he would start getting attention for the public.
Until then, his career as a seiyuu was going under the radar. After 2018, Komada started to get roles with more importance but a leading character is still something that he hasn’t had the possibility to voice in anime.
2013 –
Making a name for himself
Komada’s first role was in the comedy and harem anime, Hayate no Gotoku! Cuties. He is credited as minor, background character and, as official sources go, it was his first-ever role in anime.
In the same year he picked up another minor role, this time around in Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live.
A year later, in 2014, Komada was everywhere however, still voicing minor character roles in anime such as Kaitou Joker, keroro, RAIL WARS!, Puripara, Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo, Zankyou no Terror, Doraemon, Baby Steps!, between many others.
2015 was no different, with Komada picking up minor roles in Ore Monogatari!!, Kyoukai no Rinne, Psycho-Pass: The Movie, Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu, Punch Line and Yowamushi Pedal: Grande Road.
2016 and 2017 counted with more minor roles in anime such as Amanchu!, Cardfight!! Vanguard G: GIRS Crisis-hen, Qualidea Code, Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan, HaruChika: Haruta to Chika wa Seishun suru, Detective Conan, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen, Hand Shakers, Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul, Yowamushi Pedal: New Generation, Puzzle & Dragons Cross, DIVE!!, The iDOLM@STER SideM (cameo as Chris Koron, among many others.
2018 was a big year for Komada. Although his sudden popularity increased due to the launch of Hypnosis Mic late in the year, it was still a year of learning and making his name known.
And thus, the opportunity to voice a supporting character appeared in the form of him reprising his role as Chris Koron in the chibi anime, The iDOLM@STER SideM: Wake Atte Mini!.
The rest of the year was pretty much more of the same, always with a focus on getting his name out there and voicing characters in a wide variety of anime genres.
Some of his minor roles were in anime such as Pop Team Epic, Fate/Extra: Last Encore, Saredo Tsumibito wa Ryuu to Odoru, Piano no Mori, Baki, High Score Girl, Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san, Ace Attorney, just to name a few.
In 2019, Komada grabbed a supporting role in the ecchi anime, Yubisaki kara no Honki no Netsujou: Osananajimi wa Shouboushi.
As one of the firefighters in the series’ clean version, Jun Hase.
More minor roles followed in anime such as Saint Seiya: Saintia Shou, Pastel Memories, Kenja no Mago, Fruits Basket, Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin, Ensemble Stars!, Kabukichou Sherlock and Diamond no Ace: Act II.
2020 kicked off quietly with a supporting role in ARP Backstage Pass and a leading role in the ecchi anime (clean version), Ore no Yubi de Midarero.: Heitengo Futarikiri no Salon de… as Sousuke Nanase.
In July 2020, Komada is going to reprise his role as MAD TRIGGER CREW‘s Jyuto Iruma in the anime adaptation, Hypnosis Mic-Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima.
Komada has yet to take a big step and get more supporting characters and his first-ever leading role however, it is already noticeable that it is a question of time until that happens, especially now that he’s starting to get more roles in big anime projects with high-profile seiyuu in the cast.
Awards
In 2019, at the 13th Seiyuu Awards, Wataru Komada and the main cast of Hypnosis Mic – members of Buster Bros!!!, MAD TRIGGER CREW, Fling Posse and Matenro – received the Singing Award.
Wataru Komada did not attend the ceremony, instead, Subaru Kimura, Show Hayami, Kouhei Amasaki, Yukihiro Nozuyama, Ryuichi Kijima, and Haruki Ishiya represented the franchise.
Radio
Radio has been a great and big outlet for Wataru Komada. Since his debut he has taken part in several radio shows either as a co-host or a guest but, as of late, he has been leading his own radio shows.
His first radio show appearance was in 2011 as a co-host for Sayuri ojosama to shitsuji Komada. The lasted almost a year, wrapping up in 2012.
After guesting on MF Cafe Bunko J ALive (2014), Raji doratsu! Yoru no Drama House (2015), Komada was a couple of years away from this field, only returning in 2018.
Wataru Komada‘s 1st solo endeavor as a radio host came in the form of MAN TWO MONTH RADIO Komada Wataru K-WAVE Radio.
MAN TWO MONTH RADIO is a radio show that counts with a different seiyuu host each month. It kicked off with fellow seiyuu and 81 Produce talent, Soma Saito in 2015, and, over the years, it has been a fantastic outlet for newbies or less-known seiyuu to have their voices heard and their talents appreciated.
Seiyuu would choose their theme, the name of the radio show, and variety corners, as well as handle solo hosting of the said radio show.
Komada kicked off MAN TWO MONTH RADIO Komada Wataru K-WAVE Radio in 2018 and it would be the foundation to, a year later, kick off a radio show of a similar name for the same radio broadcaster.
Komada・Fukamachi no Bar Blue Bird (2018 -)
Alongside fellow seiyuu and IDOLM@STER SideM member Toshinari Fukamachi, Wataru Komada started co-hosting Komada・Fukamachi no Bar Blue Bird in 2018.
The duo acts as bartenders, listening in on the listeners’ worries and problems and giving advice in return. This is one of the most popular Radio Tomo shows.
The radio show would, in 2019, lead to the debut of the duo as VERSION.10.
Dakara B mo suki 〜 Basket Biscuit 〜 (2018)
Still in 2018, Komada teamed up with fellow seiyuu and 81 Produce talent, Yuuka Takeuchi. Dakara B mo suki 〜 Basket Biscuit 〜 aired in 2018 and was focused on shining a light on SJ3.LEAGUE, seiyuu junior Basketball League.
IDOLMASTER SideM Radio 315Night! (2019)
Alongside Legenders’ members Fumiyoshi Shioya and Jun Kasama, Komada hosted the radio show IDOLMASTER SideM Radio 315Night! in 2019.
As per usual with this radio show, it was entertaining and filled with a great, warm vibe, fun corners and a lot of crazy shenanigans.
Komada Wataru no K-Wave radio (2019 -)
Komada was back heading his own radio show in 2019.
Spawning from his previous stint at MAN TWO MONTH RADIO, Komada brought back Komada Wataru K-WAVE Radio and revamped it into an entertaining and mature radio show.
U-nite! 81Wednesday Komada Wataru no Cheer up! (2019 -)
81 Produce has always been very keen on having their talents tackle radio work and, to add to the countless radio shows created or powered by the talent agency, in 2019 U-nite! 81Wednesday was born.
Shinichiro Miki, Yoshiki Nakajima, Shinichiro Kamio, Koutaro Nishiyama, and more talents already had their take on the radio show. Komada’s take on the show took the form of U-nite! 81Wednesday Komada Wataru no Cheer up!, a radio show that is self-explanatory – it is made to cheer up his listeners.
Komada Wataru to Kimura Subaru World Ving Ving Satellite (2020)
In 2020, Komada Wataru to Kimura Subaru World Ving Ving Satellite, radio show co-hosted with fellow Hypnosis Mic member, Subaru Kimura, started airing.
This was a pretty laidback show in which the focus is put on what is popular among the listeners, experiences while living abroad, dating advice in foreign countries, and more, fueling an entire show with international and unique things.
The duo’s chemistry stood out from the very first episode. Kimura’s laidback, naturally funny personality and Komada’s sassy remarks and sense of humor as well as both seiyuu’s international background – Subaru was born in Germany + of German descent and Komada lived in Germany for almost a decade – make the show incredibly entertaining.
Games
Komada got his first roles in video games in 2015. He’s commonly found voicing characters in RPG and otome games.
Although his repertoire is still not impressive, he has been doing work in this field rather consistently, having managed to grab roles in games every year since his debut in this field.
Some of his most important roles include Akiomi Kunugi in Ensemble Stars!, Chris Koron in the IDOLM@STER SideM games and Jyuto Iruma in Hypnosis Mic – Alternative Rap Battle –.
Ensemble Stars! (2015 -)
In 2015 he joined the cast of Ensemble Stars!, an idol grooming game that quickly turned into one of the most popular games that involve 2D idols.
Ensemble Stars! is a story-driven game that easily shot to popularity with its solid story and rich music released outside of the game. Komada voices Akiomi Kunugi, a teacher and member of Jin & Akiomi, known for his sarcastic and sadistic personality.
THE IDOLM@STER SideM (2015 -) and SideM LIVE ON ST@GE! (2017 -)
Wataru Komada joined the cast of the ambitious male spin to the popular idol grooming franchise IDOLM@STER, The IDOLM@STER SideM. He was cast as Legenders‘ member, Chris Koron.
The character is featured in THE IDOLM@STER SideM and SideM LIVE ON ST@GE!, the two-game iterations stemming from the SideM franchise.
Hypnosis Mic – Alternative Rap Battle – (2020)
Komada reprised his role as MAD TRIGGER CREW‘s Jyuto Iruma in the smartphone game, Hypnosis Mic – Alternative Rap Battle –.
The game features a short introductory story for each crew, with Jyuto standing out for his disdain for the main character – the player – and being too analytical and cold in his approach.
Other games in which Komada has voiced characters include: Kobayashi is too cute!, Sumakare, Shiro Neko Project, SOUL REVERSE ZERO, Endride, BORDER BREAK, AKA TO BLUE, Quiz RPG: The World of Mystic Wiz, SAMURAI SPIRITS, ASTRAL CHAIN, Kyoutou Kotoba RPG: Kotodaman, Disney: Twisted-Wonderland, Olympia Soiree and more.
Live reading
Live reading is something in which 81 Produce and its talents usually invest a lot of time in. From 81 Produce’s live-reading events to other interesting live-reading events, Wataru Komada has managed to stay rather active in this field.
In 2018 he joined the cast of 謎解きはディナーのあとで (Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de), a detective story that counted with some of 81 Produce’s top male seiyuu talents on its lineup such as Soma Saito, Shinnichiro Kamio, Koutaro Nishiyama, Shunsuke Takeuchi, Wataru Komada, Arthur Lounsbery and Yuki Yonai.
In 2017 he participated in Recitation Play TARO alongside Yoshiki Nakajima and Kento Ito.
In 2018 he joined the cast of 謎解きはディナーのあとで (Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de), a detective story that counted with some of 81 Produce’s top male seiyuu talents on its lineup such as Soma Saito, Shinnichiro Kamio, Koutaro Nishiyama, Shunsuke Takeuchi, Kento Ito, Arthur Lounsbery and Yuki Yonai.
In 2019, Komada joined the cast of the musical live-reading play, The Great Gatsby.

Narration
Wataru Komada has been active as a narrator. His best know credit is as the narrator for the weekly TV show, news zero since 2018. Due to his calm and steady mid-toned voice, Komada is often found doing narration for NHK’s educational shows.
Other narration credits include Journeys in Japan, Anison Days, Nippon! Rekishi Kantei, Science ZERO, Space Shower TV “Minus Life Orchestra”, between more.
Komada also counts with some voice-over credits for commercials.
Drama CDs
While Komada made his debut as a seiyuu in 2013, he does not have many credits when it comes do drama CDs.
Over the years, and particularly after 2018, Komada started to join high-profile projects in this field such as the drama CDs for Anthos and Hypnosis Mic.
He is commonly found in BL, with more than 15 credits in drama CDs such as MODS after story, Koisuru tetsumenpi, Fudanshi-kun no shitorasudeizu, Dragless sex, 10DANCE, Akai Ito no Shikkou Yuuyo, Hidoku shinaide 2 and 3, between many others.
Music
Contrary to most seiyuu that started rising in popularity in the last decade, Komada is a rare case of not having his own solo debut.
However, that does not mean that he does not have his feet in the music – particularly in the idol – industry.
When it comes to music Wataru Komada has quite a few buzzworthy credits under his belt. From being part of the insanely popular IDOLM@STER SideM franchise, to being part of one of the most popular crews in Hypnosis Mic to even being part of an experimental and unique idol group, Komada has done more than enough than to impress with his versatility.
Legenders (2015 -)
In 2014, Komada joined the cast of THE IDOLM@STER‘s male version, IDOLM@STER SideM. He was cast as Chris Koron, a member of Legenders.
The group debuted in 2014 and counts with Fumiyoshi Shioya, Jun Kasama, and Wataru Komada.
Legenders‘ songs are passionate and filled with motivational words.
When it comes to live performances, the group showcases their chemistry with powerful vocals and fancy choreographies. Among all members, Jun Kasama stands out for both his smooth baritone vocals and slick dance moves.
Up until now, the trio has released one single, THE IDOLM@STER Sidem ST@RTING LINE-15 Legenders (2016). Aside from this single, Legenders has participated in several cross-unit and solo song projects within the franchise.
So far, the trio participated in four IDOLMASTER SideM stages: 1st STAGE 〜ST@RTING!〜 (2016), 2nd STAGE 〜ORIGIN@L STARS〜 (2017), 3rd STAGE 〜GLORIOUS ST@GE!〜 (2018) and THE IDOLM@STER SideM 4th LIVE STAGE 〜TRE@SURE GATE〜 (2019).
They also participated in the fan meeting tour “GREETING TOUR 2017 ~BEYOND THE DREAM~” in 2017 and THE IDOLM@STER SideM’s Five-St@r Party!! in 2018.
Jin & Akiomi (2017 -)
Although fans of Ensemble Stars! already known the duo Jin & Akiomi since 2014, the year in which the popular idol-breeding smartphone game was released, it was only in 2017 that they got to experience the awesomeness of this duo.
Jin & Akiomi consists on Jin Sagami (voiced by Tomoyasu Hishiba) and Akiomi Kunugi (voiced by Wataru Komada).
So far, the duo has released two singles: Ensemble Stars! Jin Sagami & Akiomi Kunugi Idol Song CD (2017) and Ensemble Stars! Jin Sagami & Akiomi Kunugi New Idol Song (2018).
A new release, titled Ensemble Stars!! ES Idol Song Extra Jin & Akiomi is scheduled to hit stores in June 2020.
MAD TRIGGER CREW (2018 -)
Known for their incisive and intimidating rap style, MAD TRIGGER CREW quickly turned into a fan-favorite crew within the Hypnosis Mic franchise.
Having lived in Germany for over 9 years, Komada mentioned that he was exposed to hip-hop and listened to it, namely Eminem. However, rapping as a character posed an initial issue for Komada but, as time has passed and more releases have been made, his skills have been improving by heaps and bounds.
With the cast including Shintaro Asanuma (as Samatoki), Shinichiro Kamio (as Rio) and Wataru Komada (as Jyuto), the crew quickly rose in the ranks, catching the attention of those fans of roughened-up, dangerous and straightforward rap coming from the perspectives of the unexpected duo including a Yakuza member, a former military member, and a corrupt police officer.
The crew made their debut in 2017 with the release of the rough and gritty single, BAYSIDE M.T.C. MAD TRIGGER CREW were dressed in a funky, bassy dark sound, not sparing anyone with their fiery rhymes, raw performances with melancholic and menacing undertones.
After the release of the introductory singles for each crew, Hypnosis Mic kicked off their 1st Battle Season series.
MAD TRIGGER CREW faced Buster Bros!!! in the first round in Buster Bros!!! VS MAD TRIGGER CREW.
The mini-album was a huge success much thanks to the voting system for the whole Battle Season that only made it possible to vote if you purchased the CD in physical or digital format. Buster Bros!!! VS MAD TRIGGER CREW was certified Gold by RIAJ in 2018.
After beating Buster Bros!!!, MAD TRIGGER CREW battled against the winners of the Fling Posse vs Matenro battle, Matenro.
The battle was fierce, something that quickly translated into the massive sales numbers MAD TRIGGER CREW VS Matenro pulled. The album was certified Gold by RIAJ in 2018. MAD TRIGGER CREW ended up losing the battle for Matenro but deserved massive respect for the hard-fought battle.
In 2019, the crew released the hard-hitting Shinogi (Dead Pools), featured in the compilation album, Enter the Hypnosis Microphone.
The crew returned in 2020 with the release of MAD TRIGGER CREW Before The 2nd D.R.B, a critically acclaimed album that brought the good vibes of Yokohama while giving us a collection of songs that explore bonds, loyalty, family, what being a true gangster really means in the eyes of this crew. It was a masterful release, easily the best the crew has released so far.
Komada performed Uncrushable, song that stood out for its top-tier instrumental and vibe.
In a live setting, MAD TRIGGER CREW are not the most consistent of crews.
While their rap is often on point, there are times in which the leader – Shintaro Asanuma – stumbles on his lyrics, misses tempo, and even makes the mood of an already moody song – for example, Shinogi (Dead Pools) – sound too boring and soulless. But when the group is in their best form, they have power and poise that makes a massive impression.
Wataru Komada tends to be extremely reliable in a live setting, making up for changes in tempo – made by mistake by Asanuma – and connecting well with fellow member and 81 Produce talent, Shinichiro Kamio, creating a great group synergy in which everyone covers for each other.
So far the crew has performed live 5 times, although in different contexts. The first franchise release on Blu-ray and DVD is Hypnosis mic- Division Rap Battle – 4th LIVE @ Osaka, a massive live held in 2019 that counted with Buster Bros!!!, MAD TRIGGER CREW, Fling Posse, Matenro, and the, then recently announced, Dotsuitare Honpo and Bad Ass Temple.
In 2020, due to issues with Coronavirus (COVID-19), Hypnosis Mic’s ambitious MetLife Dome live, SIX SHOTS TO THE DOME was cancelled.
Instead, all crews performed on 29/03/2020 on a special broadcast by AbemaTV, Hypnosis mic- Division Rap Battle – 5th LIVE @ AbemaTV – SIX SHOTS UNTIL THE DOME that counted with millions of live views.
In April 2020, a new issue of the popular manga Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- side B.B & M.T.C vol.3. includes a new song, a duet with Rio Busujima (CV: Shinichiro Kamio) titled Private Time.
Division All Stars (2017 – )
Division All Stars‘ original lineup consisted of Buster Bros!!!, MAD TRIGGER CREW, Fling Posse and Matenro. In 2019, with the addition of Dotsuitare Honpo and Bad Ass Temple to the franchise, the group now houses all groups.
Their first release was Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- in 2017. This was the explosive start even before anyone knew how each crew would end up sounding.
The song was an instant hit and brought a massive following from overseas to the project.
In 2018, Division All Stars returned with the electrifying Hypnosis Mic Division Battle Anthem. The success it met was even more than on their debut song.
Now that the project was popular, it was a matter of a couple of days until it hit 1 million views.
The release also included new songs for each group including the legendary The Dirty Dawg.
The song was quickly followed by Hypnosis Mic – Alternative Rap Battle-, song featured as the theme song for the smartphone game, Hypnosis Mic -Alternative Rap Battle-.
Still in the same year, Division All Stars returned with a new take on their debut song, Hypnosis Mic Division Battle Anthem.
After the franchise introduced 2 new units to the franchise, Dotsuitare Honpo and Bad Ass Temple, the classic track got a revamp, thus Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-+ was released.
In 2020, Division All Stars made their comeback and once again revamping one of their hit songs. Hypnosis Mic -Division Battle Anthem- was revamped, adding Dotsuitare Honpo and Bad Ass Temple into the mix, creating Hypnosis Mic -Division Battle Anthem-+.

So far, the group has released 4 singles:
Their unique sound completely strays away from regular idol projects.
The lyrics delve into darker themes, the instrumentals do not focus on what is trendy, instead the focus is put on a minimalistic electronica sound with elements of hip-hop and tropical house that captures the listeners’ attention.
SwingCATS (2019 -)
All in the same year, Komada joined the cast of the jazz music project, JAZZ-ON!, as part of SwingCATS.
