Haruki Ishiya

KANJI: 石谷 春貴

BORN: January 14, 1992

OCCUPATION: Voice actor

HEIGHT: 171cm

Haruki Ishiya was born on January 14, 1992 in Miyazaki, Japan and is currently represented by Office Osawa.

Seiyuu

Ishiya’s path toward becoming a voice actor started with a setback in his life.

During middle school, he assisted backstage for a children’s theater troupe at a friend’s invitation and developed an interest in acting.

But at that time he was more invested in track and field, being active as an athlete. However, he ended up suffering an injury during a competition in his second year of high school.

According to Ishiya in an interview for ddnavi, the next day, the doctor told him, “You can’t do track and field anymore as a high school student“, so he had to give up.

While hospitalized, he was deeply moved by a line spoken by Hiroshi Nohara from “Crayon Shin-chan” and decided to pursue voice acting seriously.

He attended a university in Gunma Prefecture. During that time, he was working part-time to save money for the enrollment fee for a training school plus the expenses of traveling to Tokyo, starting from zero acting experience.

He graduated from the Pro-Fit Voice Actor Training School.

And in 2013 he was ready to debut.

2013 – 2016

Making a name for himself

He debuted as a voice actor in 2013, kicking off the year with several minor roles in tow. Some of his minor roles were in anime series such as Golden Time and Strike the Blood.

In 2016, Ishiya continued to get minor and supporting roles with very few lines in anime series such as Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan and Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans 2nd Season.

Tamotsu Denkigai

In 2017, Haruki Ishiya finally got a chance to voice a main character in an anime series. He was cast as Tamotsu Denkigai in the action/ecchi anime series, Akiba’s Trip -The Animation-.

This was the very first time that people would get to listen to Ishiya’s acting for more than just a couple of seconds – like in many of the minor and supporting roles he’d gotten in the past.

And he did a solid job in this anime – despite it not having been quite the hit that some expected it’d be, seeing as it was based in a game.

The game counted with an attention-grabbing story that followed the dealings of 4 different rock bands.

The game’s band lineup counted not only the main 4 bands – OSIRISBLASTFairy AprilCure2tron – but also the legends DesTIRARE and the rival bands CrystalCross and Freezing.

Teppei Shirayuki
Teppei Shirayuki

Ishiya voiced the passionate and caring Teppei Shirayuki, BLAST‘s drummer.

Although he is tough-looking, something that usually scares children and makes most people think he’s older than he is, Teppei is a 16-year-old with a heart of gold.

Despite the announcements of new bands joining the lineup and a new storyline kicking off in 2018, the reality was that Sony and Aniplex ended up putting Band Yarouze! in a weird “alive-but-not-really” situation.

Updates ceased to be delivered to the game, however, the game is still playable.

Jiro Yamada in Hypnosis Mic – Alternative Rap Battle – (2020 -)

Jiro Yamada game

Ishiya reprised his role as Buster Bros!!!‘s Jiro Yamada in the smartphone game, Hypnosis Mic – Alternative Rap Battle –.

The game features a short introductory story for each crew, with Ichiro’s love for his brothers and passion for hip-hop being highlighted in all story parts.

Sebek Zigvolt in Disney Twisted-Wonderland (2020 – )

Music

Haruki Ishiya started to be active in the 2D music industry back in 2016 as he joined the powerpop band BLAST however he’s best known for being a member of the groovy rap trio, Buster Bros!!!.

He’s best known for being part of the following 2D music groups:

2016 welcomed an ambitious rock rhythm game, Band Yarouze!. The franchise introduced 4 main bands: OSIRIS, BLAST, Fairy April and Cure2tron.

BLAST‘s lineup counts with Youji Ikuta (vocals), Daiki Yamashita, Haruki Ishiya, and Toshiki Masuda.

The band has a youthful yet aggressive punk-rock/punk-pop sound that easily sets it apart from all other music within the franchise.

Since their debut, BLAST released a couple of insert songs for the game – that were later released in Duel Gig albums – and performed live twice.

Since for the Duel Gig live shows only the vocalists for OSIRIS and BLAST attended, Masuda never took part in any of the franchise’s live shows.

Aside from the group songs, Ishiya performed solo (as Sosuke Maki) on “heartbeat“, song later released on DUEL GIG EXTRA, Best Of album released in November 2018.

BUSTER BROS!!! (2017 -)

buster bros!!!

Known for their free and groovy rap style, Buster Bros!!! are a beloved crew within the Hypnosis Mic franchise.

With the cast including Subaru Kimura (as Ichiro), Haruki Ishiya (as Jiro) and Kouhei Amasaki (as Saburo), Buster Bros!!! have a fun take on rap, with 3 completely different vibes converging to creating their unique, bouncy hip-hop.

The voice actors have grown to be like a family, with Ishiya and Amasaki learning rapping skills from Kimura, which has vastly helped the crew improve their delivery for each new song they present to their fans.

buster bros

The crew debuted in 2017 with the release of the imposing single, Buster Bros!!! Generation.

Buster Bros!!! were overflowing with energy for their debut release.

After the release of the introductory singles for each crew, Hypnosis Mic kicked off their 1st Battle Season series.

Buster Bros!!! faced MAD TRIGGER CREW in the first round in Buster Bros!!! VS MAD TRIGGER CREW.

The mini-album was a huge success much thanks to the voting system for the whole Battle Season that only made it possible to vote if you purchased the CD in physical or digital format.

Buster Bros!!! VS MAD TRIGGER CREW was certified Gold by RIAJ in 2018.

Buster Bros!!! ended up losing their battle against MAD TRIGGER CREW but it was still a tight one, only decided in the last days of voting.

In 2019, the crew released the playful おはようイケブクロ (Ohayou Ikebukuro), featured in the compilation album, Enter the Hypnosis Microphone.

Buster Bros!!! Before The 2nd D.R.B
Buster Bros!!! Before The 2nd D.R.B

The crew returned in 2020 with the release of Buster Bros!!! Before The 2nd D.R.B, a critically acclaimed album that brought plenty of cool, groovy songs exuding freedom and fun that is unique to this crew.

In 2021, the group participated in the 2nd Division Rap Battle series, first going head-to-head with Doutsuitare Hompo in “Dotsuitare Hompo vs Buster Bros!!!“.

Buster Bros!!! went on to beat Dotsuitare Hompo, advancing for the very first time to a final in the Division Rap Battle series.

On a live setting, Buster Bros!!! showcase impressive chemistry and coordination, with no one being left behind or outshining others. In that sense, Buster Bros!!! are as good live as Fling Posse are.

Hypnosis mic - Division Rap Battle - 4th LIVE @ Osaka Welcome to our Hood Buster Bros!!!

With Subaru Kimura leading the way, the live Buster Bros!!!, are a force to be reckoned with.

Their chemistry stands out, with members covering for each other in a pretty seamless way and rhymes flowing like it is second nature to all members.

Due to Subaru Kimura’s charismatic self overflowing with energy and never missing a beat, Haruki Ishiya and Kouhei Amasaki shine.

As a result, the crew is lively and intense on stage. So far the crew has performed live 7 times, although in different contexts.

The first franchise release on Blu-ray and DVD is Hypnosis mic- Division Rap Battle – 4th LIVE @ Osaka, massive live held in 2019 that counted with Buster Bros!!!, MAD TRIGGER CREW, Fling Posse, Matenro, and the, then recently announced, Dotsuitare Honpo and Bad Ass Temple.

In 2020, and due to issues with Coronavirus (COVID-19), Hypnosis Mic’s ambitious MetLife Dome live, SIX SHOTS TO THE DOME was cancelled.

Instead, all crews performed on 29/03/2020 on a special broadcast by AbemaTV, Hypnosis mic- Division Rap Battle – 5th LIVE @ AbemaTV – SIX SHOTS UNTIL THE DOME that counted with millions of live views.

In January 2021, the Hypnosis Mic held its 6th live “2nd D.R.B”, with the 3rd battle counting with Dotsuitare Hompo vs Buster Bros!!!.

Buster Bros!!! went against Matenro and Fling Posse in Buster Bros!!! VS Matenro VS Fling Posse”.

Kicking off the year, Buster Bros!!! participated in Hypnosis Mic’s 2nd full-length album “CROSS A LINE“.

The crew performed “IKEBUKURO WEST BLOCK PARTY”, song that channels good vibes right from the start.

At the time I reviewed this song I wrote “Fighting spirit and pride take over and lead the way for Buster Bros!!!’s “IKEBUKURO WEST BLOCK PARTY”, song that is, easily, the best the crew has released so far.

Still in the same year, the crew was back on stage for Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- 8th LIVE《CONNECT THE LINE》.

In April 2023, the Hypnosis Mic franchise held a large-scale live show featuring all crews titled Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- 9th LIVE ≪ZERO OUT≫.

Their first release was Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- in 2017. This was the explosive start even before anyone knew how each crew would end up sounding.

The song was an instant hit and brought a massive following from overseas to the project.

In 2018, Division All Stars returned with the electrifying Hypnosis Mic Division Battle Anthem. The success it met was even more than on their debut song.

Now that the project was popular, it was a matter of a couple of days until it hit 1 million views.

In 2019, Hypnosis Mic released its first compilation album. Enter the Hypnosis Microphone featured all of Division All Stars‘ songs plus a new ensemble track, Hoodstar.

The release also included new songs for each group including the legendary The Dirty Dawg – from which Kimura’s character, Ichiro, was a part.

The song was quickly followed by Hypnosis Mic – Alternative Rap Battle-, song featured as the theme song for the smartphone game, Hypnosis Mic -Alternative Rap Battle-.

Still in the same year, Division All Stars returned with a new take on their debut song, Hypnosis Mic Division Battle Anthem.

After the franchise introduced 2 new units to the franchise, Dotsuitare Honpo and Bad Ass Temple, the classic track got a revamp, thus Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-+ was released.

In 2020, Division All Stars made their comeback and once again revamped one of their hit songs. Hypnosis Mic -Division Battle Anthem- was revamped, adding Dotsuitare Honpo and Bad Ass Temple into the mix, creating Hypnosis Mic -Division Battle Anthem-+.

And in 2020, Division All Stars released the fan favorite, and up until July of the same year, ingame exclusive, Survival of the Illest.

Still in the same year, Division All Stars released the funky tune “SUMMIT OF DIVISIONS“. The song was included with the franchise’s Hypnosis Mic – Division Rap Battle – Official Guide Book.

Ryodan nakama wa shinjite mo, rakuda no himo wa shibatte oke

The group released its first CD JAZZ-ON! Sessions 「Ryodan nakama wa shinjite mo, rakuda no himo wa shibatte oke in 2019.

Due to the franchise’s unusual organization of pair and group songs, in this CD, Kawanishi didn’t perform any song.

In 2020, the group released JAZZ-ON! Sessions 「星屑寄れば文殊の知恵」(Hoshikuzu Yoreba Monju no Chie).

Hoshikuzu Yoreba Monju no Chie
Hoshikuzu Yoreba Monju no Chie

In this CD, Ishiya showed his vocal chops by performing alongside Takeaaki Masuyama in “Tomorokoshi hata no numuhogu“.

At the time I reviewed the CD, I wrote “Out of both, I was only unaware of how Haruki Ishiya would sound like as a singer, but I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. Sweet mid-tones, good control over his vibrato, and knows how to harmonize.

In 2021, the JAZZ-ON! franchise kicked off its very 1st shuffle CD series. The series would end up having a total of 4 CDs.

Tone of Stars Beta JAZZ-ON!

Haruki Ishiya participated in Tone of Stars Beta. He performed the self-titled song “Tone of Stars Beta” alongside Kent Ito, Yoshiki Nakajima and Kengo Kawanishi.

Facts

Coming from a big family

According to him, in an interview for a Japanese news outlet, Ishiya is the eldest of 4 brothers.

In this third episode of “MAN TWO MONTH RADIO: Haruki Ishiya’s Let’s Do Our Best Moderately Without Overdoing It,” Ishiya talked about cakes, given that Christmas was just around the corner.

He elaborated saying that, with all his brothers being boys in their growth phase, cakes were always in high demand and sometimes even contested.

From participating in a rap project to actually wanting to learn more

When he joined the Hypnosis Mic project back in 2017, Haruki Ishiya wasn’t that confident in his rapping skills. However, alongside Kouhei Amasaki, he started learning from Subaru Kimura to improvise, improve his rap flow, and work as a rap group, hanging out outside of the recordings.

And truth is, quickly, Ishiya improved his rapping skills and ended up being one of the most explosive and confident seiyuu on stage for Hypnosis Mic’s live shows.

Was part of the track and field team

In this third episode of “MAN TWO MONTH RADIO: Haruki Ishiya’s Let’s Do Our Best Moderately Without Overdoing It”, Ishiya revealed that he used to participate in track and field.

Before that, he had some experience in swimming, even participating in district tournaments. He also mentioned learning the basics of martial arts through self-defense classes.

Tried a bit of everything before taking on voice acting full-time

Before embracing voice acting as his full-time job, Haruki Ishiya worked in a kindergarten, did childcare, accompanied sales activities at an advertising agency, and worked part-time at restaurants and convenience stores.

He’s calm even angry

In the 3rd episode of “MAN TWO MONTH RADIO: Haruki Ishiya’s Let’s Do Our Best Moderately Without Overdoing It”, Ishiya was asked if he was the type to be scary when angry.

However, he mentioned that he rarely gets angry. He clarified that he’s not the type to get “scary” when angry; instead, he tends to address things calmly and logically, which might come across as intimidating.

Always in touch with family, friends, and acquaintances

Haruki Ishiya gives a lot of value to reaching out to others.

He mentioned in the 2nd episode of “MAN TWO MONTH RADIO: Haruki Ishiya’s Let’s Do Our Best Moderately Without Overdoing It” that he sometimes looks back at LINE conversations and randomly calls people he hasn’t been in touch with for a while.

At the same time, Ishiya mentioned that he sends New Year’s cards to those who have been helpful to him every year, as well as gifts to his family.

Takes care of others, even when drunk

In the 1st episode of “MAN TWO MONTH RADIO: Haruki Ishiya’s Let’s Do Our Best Moderately Without Overdoing It” Ishiya clarified that he doesn’t change much when he drinks alcohol; in fact, he often ends up taking care of drunk people instead.

  1. To this day, I would never think that having an injury during highschool can lead some Japanese people take on a seiyuu career path. Him and Yūki Ono. Then there are some who had a job they didn’t like to be in (Yusuke Kobayashi).

I wonder what my most fave Taito Ban had gone through during his younger years. All I know so far is that he’s a talented late bloomer (having his breakout role known to the world lately) and that he’s the “most junior” in comparison with his same-aged peers who ventured into voice acting way earlier than when he did back in 2017.
