Track analysis:

1 – モラトリアム (Moratorium)

Tomoe (CV: Yuya Hirose) makes a big entrance in the TOKYO COLOR SONIC!! franchise with “Moratorium“.

This song kicks off with muffled rhodes piano melodies before opening the curtains to a laidback jazz-meets-hip-hop tune. The Rhodes piano and atmospheric synths create a stylish sound that is incredibly warm and welcoming.

Comfortably, the simple hi–hat + snare beat teams up with jazz-style guitar licks and an emotional bassline to further expand on this relaxing soundscape.

As a whole, the song is incredibly laidback, focused on its good vibes. As such, you will barely notice the subtle changes in tone between the verses and chorus.

Worth mentioning that this song has a blues-style guitar solo that caught me by surprise. Still, the way this song was progressing certainly demanded the emotions to overflow through in some way, and that guitar solo – actually, all guitar work in this song, particularly in the outro – more than made sure that happened.

To match the fresh, laidback vibes in this song, Yuya Hirose takes the spotlight to himself with an extraordinary performance that mixes a downtempo, stylish brand of rapping with clean, gentle singing.

This results in a mesmerizing performance that made me wish this song never ended.

All in all, “Moratorium” is one of those songs that you must have on a summer playlist all about good, laidback vibes. It is stylish, well produced, and with a performance by Yuya Hirose that will make you beg for more.
