1 – my redemption

Shiki Takamura opens the curtains to the Ano koro no Bokura was my dear days CD series with “my redemption“.

Glitchy synth stabs and a simple bassy beat serve as the core instrumentalization to this tune however don’t think this is all there is to this song.

The minimalistic instrumental serves as the perfect stage for Shiki’s stylish rapping, leading to a powerful chorus.

And yes, while the verses are simple, the chorus is the polar opposite, bringing forth an intense sound in which the beat goes deep and heavy adding hi-hat triplets into the mix as well as a simplistic synth melody and a pounding bassline.

Instead of rapping, this part is all about clean singing, following the delicate piano notes connecting the pre-chorus to the chorus.

The chorus, however, will go by in a flash.

And the bridge arrives a bit earlier than expected and that’s because the song will be set to playing tricks on you, ending – apparently – in what is a relatively long silence before resuming in full power for a final chorus.

The pacing is intense while the song is rather minimalistic at its core, concentrating its intensity on specific moments.

While Shiki’s previous solo performances had been more intense right from the start, this composition and overall performance give off a sense of maturity and mystery. As you look back at Shiki’s path until now, this performance is a massive upgrade over everything else he has done before.

As far as the vocals go, Takuya Eguchi is all about a dual performance, embracing a steady, slow-paced style of rapping in the verses as opposed to his clean singing in the chorus (which includes as well high pitch vocals used in the bridge of this song).

All in all, Shiki’s “my redemption” showcases maturity and consistency through a unique composition and a powerful dual performance.
