Track analysis (only “Yodoushi no Mokkou” was reviewed):

1 – 夜通しの黙考

An emotional piano melody opens the curtains to an acoustic tune in “Yodoushi no Mokkou”.

The verses bring laidback acoustic guitar riffs to the spotlight while a minimalistic bass + snare beat paints the nostalgic yet mysterious soundscape in which you are now enveloped.

While the verses are fairly simple and quiet, leaving a lot of space available for the vocals to slowly deliver an emotional performance, there is a big surprise in the chorus.

The chorus in “Yodoushi no Mokkou” is up there as one of the most beautiful QUELL has ever presented its fans with.

The way the strings scream in the background, going for those high, emotional notes, the subdued piano melody, and bassline, and the way the acoustic guitar and drums were set in the soundscape will leave your mouth ajar.

The focus is all on the vocals in this part, as Shunsuke Takeuchi, Koutaro Nishiyama, Sho Nogami, and Shugo Nakamura go for a spine-chilling unison section in perfect harmony.

“Yodoushi no Mokkou” is one of those songs you’d barely notice given how quiet and subdued it is but as soon as you hit that play button, it is hypnotizing.

Perfect entry by QUELL.

REVIEW OVERVIEW

夜通しの黙考

SUMMARY

QUELL brings out a beautiful campfire-inspired acoustic tune with "Yodoushi no Mokkou". Expect haunting yet cozy verses and a powerful chorus in perfect harmonies by the group. The simplicity in this song is overridden by the emotional range required in the chorus - easily one of the most beautiful choruses performed by the group. "Yodoushi no Mokkou" ends up being a subtle entry in the group's repertoire however, it packs quite the emotional punch that will make you want to listen to it time and time again.
