REVIEW OVERVIEW

New&Classic
ギラギラCANDY NIGHT
Rooftop
Jumping Into My World
Paradox Love's first shuffle CD brought a couple of memorable performances by the most improbable shuffle teams. Making the best out of the individual charms of all characters in this franchise, this first CD delivered 2 highlights: "New & Classic" and "Giragira CANDY NIGHT". These were the songs with the fanciest performances and the most consistency between sound + lineup. I was not expecting "Giragira CANDY NIGHT' to be so addictive but the addition of Akkan Yatsura's members to BAE's trademark trendy pop sound ended up giving way to the most impressive tune in this CD. "Rooftop" and "Jumping into my world" show contrasting charms with the first one being quiet and laid-back whereas the second one is all bubbly and upbeat. All in all, the first shuffle CD is filled with interesting hip-hop tunes ready to hit the dancefloor or the lounge. So, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Track by track analysis:

1 – New&Classic

A contrabass leads the way, welcoming you to this fancy jazz-hop tune.

“New & Classic” has brief verses and an addictive chorus that makes the best of the flamboyance of jazz music and adds dashes of new sub-styles in hip-hop.

When it comes to the chorus, the fast hi-hat triplets and the elegant legato strings take over momentarily, before giving way to a jaunty piano melody.

The song features a break that puts an organ as the lead as the strings create a fancy soundscape.

On rapping duties, you have Gakuto Kajiwara, Ayumu Murase, Ryota Takeuchi, and Yuu Hayashi, and what a quartet this one is! You get the elegance of jazz-hop flowing through The Cat’s Whiskers’ representatives and the stylish rapping by the BAE’s representatives.

Pure class and elegance.

2 – ギラギラCANDY NIGHT

Fancy brass leads the way as you listen to a beat muffled in the background.

Welcome to “Giragira CANDY NIGHT“, song that brings forth an addictive dance sound that blends the Caribbean/African vibes from Akkan Yatsura with the fancy hip-hop sound by BAE.

The beat is deep and the brass is playful channeling those tropical vibes fans love from Akkan Yatsura with the big, addictive synths that will instantly make you want to dance.

On the vocal end, listeners will find Shima, Tasuku Hatanaka, 96neko, and Takayuki Kondo.

96neko is in charge of the melody in this song being the perfect contrast to the intense vocals by the Akkan Yatsura members.

What you get in here is an insanely addictive tune made for the dancefloor.

3 – Rooftop

“Rooftop” brings to the spotlight a lo-fi sound led by the noise of the needle hitting the vinyl.

A nostalgic piano melody loops in the background as the rap goes off tempo, creating a unique performance that feels like time passes and as time passes, it is harder to keep up with it.

Bonds and friendships are at the core of what makes this song tick and the performance stands out even in its simplicity.

The chorus is sweet and slow, spreading dreamy, laidback vibes from its comfortable beat.

As you listen to “Rooftop” you’ll notice that this song is made to quietly enjoy more so than jamming along to it. Let the words sink in. Feel the beat. And let the awesome performance by Toyonaga and Terashima impress you.

4 – Jumping Into My World

Wrapping up this CD is “Jumping Into My World” song that features vocals by Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Natsuki Hanae, 96neko, and Shogo Yano.

This is a song with quite the bubbly sound yet with a wacky performance on top courtesy of Natsuki Hanse that goes extra on his delivery.

Leading the way is Shogo Yano, spreading cute, upbeat vibes throughout this song. Making subtle entrances and exits within this song is Toshiyuki Toyonaga and on melody duty is 96neko.

This is a bubbly song through and through however, in comparison with all other songs on this shuffle CD, it pales quite a bit.
