Iori’s “Praying” is a standout performance in TOKYO COLOR SONIC!! with impressive minimalism and technical skill.

This release features Iori (CV: Soma Saito) and Kagura (CV: Takuya Eguchi). Iori is the only one performing the song on this CD.

Track analysis:

1 – praying

The last solo song in the GROWING series comes in the voice of Iori (CV: Soma Saito).

“praying” arrives with a dreamy soundscape, boasting a vast soundstage as its long intro carefully introduces the amazing tune you will be listening to in full.

The verses are simplistic, with atmospheric synths in the background, a minimalistic piano melody on top and far in the background, bassy percussion.

The stage is set for what is one of the most beautiful performances so far in the TOKYO COLOR SONIC!! franchise.

The chorus changes things around, welcoming an explosion of colors in what was otherwise a pure white soundscape.

The simplistic percussion and delicate, ethereal piano notes add a layer of beauty to this performance as Soma Saito gently and technically performs this song.

And speaking of the vocals, Soma Saito is performing in a different way that is neither low nor higher tones but lends techniques and quirks from both sides of his vocal range. He adds drama to his performance – almost in a lyrical fashion – with his open vowels in the chorus and is clearly lowering his tone in the verses while keeping himself in control throughout.

This is impressive yet it makes for a really tricky performance that will have its challenges if ever performed live (due to how low in tone and volume Saito is singing in the verses).

When the chorus arrives, he goes all out for those dramatic vocals with a lot of legato and a bit of vibrato in the mix. What you get is a beautiful and emotional performance on top of one hell of a tasteful instrumental.

All in all, Iori’s “praying” is a stunning showcase of minimalism and technicality in what is a dreamy song with one of the best performances so far in the TOKYO COLOR SONIC!! franchise.
