GRAY SHEEP

GOAT delivers a dreamy and beautiful performance in “Fly or Die”. As far as new 2D groups go, GOAT is putting themselves in the spotlight for all the right reasons.

Track analysis:

1 – Fly or Die

GOAT changes things around slightly for “Fly or Die“. The song kicks off with intense synths stabs and exciting vocals however, what you will experience is something else entirely.

As soon as the intro fades away, a dreamy vibe takes over, something that is starting to sound and look like a trademark of theirs.

The verses put the listener in the middle of a wide, echoey soundscape in which dreamy synths and a punchy bassline lead the way. The bassline is deep and punchy, something that, if like me, you enjoy good basslines, you will be all over this track.

Adding to this feel-good vibe comes a comfortable beat – however with a flat snare sound (I was expecting it to hit a bit harder and deeper) – and delicate synth runs.

The transition and build-up from the verses to the chorus is smooth, adding another reason why this song feels so laidback and relaxing to me. Also, the way the instrumental barely changes yet, at its core a lot has changed in intensity and dynamics, had me wanting to listen to the chorus time and again.

As far as the vocals go, GOAT shows a bit more of their quality and range. In this case, “Fly or Die” demands a top performance that is more than just all about the comfortable mid-tones.

In this case, you have those in the verses, a bit of an R&B touch by Kent Ito, and then you have falsetto and high notes by all members – solo and in harmony. The first time you’ll encounter those falsetto notes, you will be blown away. Chances are that, in the context of this song they may even make goosebumps all over you.

Another thing I enjoy a lot about this song is the bridge section. Starting intense yet dreamy and with a wide soundscape, its second part is closer to you, much more intimate and you can feel that the soundscape is no longer wide. In that part, the vocals shine brighter than ever.

All in all, GOAT continues to make a case for themselves, and I am really impressed with what they have been releasing so far. As far as new groups go, GOAT is slowly putting themselves in the spotlight for all the right reasons.
