Track analysis:
1 – ヒトコキュウノ (Hitokokyuuno)
Dreamy rhodes piano melodies play in the background as the sound of the needle on vinyl adds a lo-fi touch to this song. The cinematic intro brings a xylophone and strings into the mix before changing dynamics, flourishing in front of you.
The verses in “Hitokokyuuno” create a warm soundscape around the listener, keeping up the tempo but also adding a groovy element to it.
For fans of good basslines, the bassline on this song is genuinely good, really melodic, and ridiculously groovy. You will find yourself jamming along to it in no time.
Alongside it, sweet piano melodies, simple drums, and guitar riffs create a fun sound that carries the song forward.
The song feels like a journey yet a really contained, brief one that goes by in a flash.
The second verse has that feel, adding a bit of speed – apparently – to the song while brass joins in and that lo-fi sound from the intro makes its return to painting the soundscape in warm, nostalgic colors.
As far as the vocals go, this is the most comfortable I’ve listened to Daiki Yamashita as a solo artist. He plays around with his range and brings a bit of falsetto and high notes while having a lot of power in his mid-tones in the verses.
The control, the comfort, and the overall fun you can glimpse into throughout this performance put me completely at ease. It feels like a relaxed performance and as such, more natural than anything Daiki Yamashita has given so far as a solo artist.
The good vibes stay with you when this song ends, something that just makes me want to press play again. This song, despite not sounding like it, was composed in an earworm way, which means that the song never ends. The intro and outro perfectly connect with each other, creating the perfect, most pleasing loop you can have in the background.
And honestly, I’m not even complaining because good songs deserve to be listened to time and time again.
“Hitokokyuuno” sounds like a step towards Daiki Yamashita finding his true voice as a solo artist as well as a sound that suits him best.
This is his best song so far (hoping for greater things in the future for Yamashita).
While this song might go under the radar for many, I thoroughly welcome you to check it out. It is fun, its lo-fi-meet-bossa nova style in the verses is awesome and blends well with the upbeat, brighter pop-like sound in the chorus. The vibes are chill and the vocals are pleasing.
It is a song perfect for this summer.
