Track by track analysis:
1 – Hungry Wolf
Hungry Wolf is an upbeat pop song with a retro touch to it – especially in the intro led by the synths. A funky bassline leads the way on this tune, alongside mid-tempo splashy drums and simple guitar work. This is a track that easily reminds us of Trignal’s bubblegum pop in their early days. It brings out a certain fun element to this group while trying to appeal to a certain demographic, but it’s far from being fresh or unique in any way. Vocally there’s nothing out of the ordinary to point out as everyone sounded about the same. 3.5/5
2 – Twinkle☆Bingo
Putting aside the bubblegum pop from the previous track, we’re presented with an energetic pop-rock track in which raging guitar riffs take the front seat (ultimately delivering a satisfying solo in the bridge), being aided by the exciting bassline and up-tempo drumming. Synths take a bit of the background work this time around, making the unit sound a little bit better. In terms of vocal performance there are some awkward parts, mainly due to lack of control of Taku Yashiro and Chiba Shoya’s vocals. 4.5/5
Final rating:
The instrumental improvements proved to be a good choice for this unit, although not enough to make them standout positively among B-Project units. KiLLER KiNG had some problems with their debut single mainly due to those odd choices of instruments that gave way for even more exquisite instrumentals. The vocals weren’t that much polished either. Now they sound slightly better as well, still far from being good, but on a good road to improve further. Hungry Wolf is an improvement on its own and we can only hope that the unit can build up from this and further evolve their good points while minimizing their weaknesses.
“Hungry Wolf” is available for purchase on CDJAPAN for all overseas fans.
